So I lost my scooter key (cheaper chinese one) sometime over the weekend and haven't been able to find it yet. I've got a bit more looking to do before I take the next step, but I wanted to see what that step may be.

I read online that the cheapest option is to take your ignition to a locksmith and that they could probably make a key from the ignition, but that was for a motorcycle, not a cheap ass scooter. If a new ignition with keys for this thing is cheaper than that, maybe that's worth it, but i didn't know if maybe you guys have any other ideas.

What should I do (other than make sure I have duplicates after this)?

You can probably get a replacement lock cylinder and two keys for $25. Check those scooter shops like the one on Hillsborough St. That's about what it was for my Honda Rancher ATV.

cool guys. Thanks for the input. This is what I was thinking about doing. finding how much a new cylinder would be + switchout time, then find a guy who knows how to file a new one from a blank and see how much he charges.

Any idea for hooking up a sweet fingerprint ID system and to allow the push start?

Hey, I've been looking for that guy who can make a key using the lock from a blank. I haven't called the Scooter place yet to see if they might do it/know who would, but replacement is also an option... I would just have to replace all three locks.

Alright, couldn't find the key for the life of me. Gonna update with what happened in case anyone has this issue in the future. Scooterz referred me to Busse's Lock Service as they carry scooter/ATV key blanks. I called them and it sounded like it would be roughly $50-$100 depending on how much labor to get a key made from the lock impression. Scooterz would sell me a whole ne lock set that comes with two keys for around $75 used or $125 new, though that may have included installation too.

I ended up buying a replacement kit online for $25 (http://bit.ly/9TYDmQ) that matches my current lock set. Removal of the lock cylinders was pretty easy once I committed myself to sitting down to do it. Lucky my seat's a little loose/flexible so I was able to get the side panels off and get the lock cylinder up away from the seat latch.

Anyway, shipping will take a few more days, but at least I got a new set coming and it only cost me $25 and an hour or two of my time.
