Ugh, I'd hate to see the ACC or SEC expand

You guys interested in a UConn for BC swap? LOL.UConn is a pretty good public school now so academics won't be a problem. ]
3/12/2010 6:57:24 PM
I'd welcome any school whose basketball team would regularly give UNC fits
3/12/2010 7:01:41 PM
I'd welcome any school that isn't Boston College[Edited on March 12, 2010 at 7:04 PM. Reason : conference pariah]
3/12/2010 7:04:11 PM
I don't think all the schools can join other big conferences, it seems like some of them might getting really fucked over in the end
3/12/2010 7:05:02 PM
Culturally, West Virginia belongs in the SEC. I'd rather dump BC and add Pittsburgh. I hate seeing this trend towards mega conferences. But it's all about the money...
3/12/2010 7:10:48 PM
Isn't this a fairly widely held belief? I mean, you could tell from the outset that an 8-football/16-basketball team conference wasn't gonna stay together long.
3/12/2010 7:53:05 PM
Branding is key. You need a lineup that people identify right now. This is important. Like the Coke lineup. You need icons keeping together. I kinda think creating a national identity based on a "brand" that takes in a lot of teams sounds like a good idea. Group teams by style. Have them license with a company for equipment. can you imagine like a confrence of the pack, the noles, usc, like houston or another sorta fast sleek team under a nike banner? GREAT chances for matching up and promoting the colors proudly. would put together a big new brand of noticeable teams.BRANDING is key, and keeping and winning raving fans.

3/12/2010 9:49:47 PM
they have no intentions of joining a conference so as far as conference talk is concerned...they dont play football
3/12/2010 9:55:47 PM
Remember when the ACC took three Big East teams and it led to vast conference changes? That was fun. Good to see it ended well.
3/12/2010 10:18:53 PM
villanova also plays football. They just won a national championship.
3/13/2010 1:04:07 AM
You forgot Manhattan. They suck this year but they've been good before, currently in the same conference as Marist, Siena, etc. (MAAC)And yes, Notre Dame does not belong in that list.

Wheels are in motion for BIG conference realignment soon and in the coming years. Big 10 to 12 (possibly as much as 14-16). Two teams to the Pac-10. Etc, etc.The realignment of the ACC put this all in motion. College sports is changing for better or worse.
4/21/2010 10:13:03 AM
i jumped straight into the 10th page (or whatever) on this topic in the free packpride boards and the first thing i read was "if the SEC comes calling we [NC State] should jump asap".also, all of you rabid "college football needs a playoff" guys should love this.[Edited on April 21, 2010 at 10:27 AM. Reason : just saying.]

4/21/2010 12:07:22 PM
^^NCSU to the SEC? Fuck that, we'd never have any football success again.
4/21/2010 1:04:31 PM
The Big East is just an untenable conference with different teams for different sports.
4/21/2010 1:22:16 PM
Yeah the idea of NC State in the SEC is horrible. No one in the SEC, save UK and some teams riding the bandwagon if their team is good, gives a shit about basketball. NC State's national sports legacy is 99% basketball. Plus we are basically the founding member of the ACC and need to stayed grouped with UNC, Duke, and WF regardless of what happens.I personally think Clemson, FSU, and Miami should all join the SEC (football dominated schools). ACC needs to give up on the idea that the conference will ever be relevant in football. The SEC being so close hurts recruiting too much to create the depth needed across the board (even though the ACC produces nearly as much NFL talent).Vandy would fit better in the ACC as well as schools like Syracuse and UConn (basketball schools). Plus Vandy is a good fit with the other highly ranked academic schools in the ACC like Duke, GT, UVA, etc. Arkansas and Iowa should join the Big 12. ND needs to be forced to join the Big 10 along with schools like Pitt, WVU, and BC.Utah, Boise State, and BYU should join the Pac-10.The SEC would be the dominate football conference, the ACC would be the dominant basketball conference while the Big Ten, Big 12, and Pac-10 would be more balanced between both conferences. I don't know would be done with schools like Rutgers and Cincinnati. Maybe Cincinnati in the ACC?[Edited on April 21, 2010 at 1:31 PM. Reason : k]
4/21/2010 1:29:31 PM
Here is a radical scenario:Big Ten successfully poaches ND, Pitt, Louisville, one other team: Cincy? Mizzou? WVU?)SEC poaches Miami, FSU, GT, Clemson.ACC adds Syracuse, UConn, retracts to 10 teams for the time being or considers others (Rutgers, WVU, other schools with a poorer academic and/or basketball profile)?SEC and Big Ten become even more football oriented, ACC become more dominant in basketball, the Big East dissolves, evolves into something more like the old A-10 or considers the ECUs of the world.
4/21/2010 1:54:49 PM
Don't think GT would leave the ACC

4/21/2010 3:38:06 PM
I, too, listen to Taylor Zarzour
4/21/2010 7:02:29 PM
Clemson and GT will never leave the ACC. I think the ACC expands again soon, and I think the Big East implodes. The 4 super conference's idea makes a lot of sense to me for football, sort of. It'd work great for working toward a playoff I think within 10 years Cuse and UConn will be in the ACC.
4/21/2010 7:16:00 PM
What would the 4 super conferences be? between ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC10, one of those would have to go, wouldn't it?
4/21/2010 7:38:28 PM
^ Geographically, I'd wager maybe split the Big 12 up amongst everyone. Just make sure Oklahoma and Texas end up in the same place, preserve annual rivalry games, etc.
4/22/2010 12:18:25 PM
Would there be more at-large bids for the BCS games or would some upper-tier mid-majors (Conf-USA, Mountain West) get the nod?
4/22/2010 12:57:13 PM
I could give a shit about conf. championship games in football. I'd rather see big inter-regional reg. season games again, but that was a consequence of the old Independents.Seems like if people want big conferences, they should all just go Indy and rotate playing each other on an even more massive scale. One year Miami gets Penn State and ND, and the next they get West Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Pitt. Who cares about creating "Big East Loyalty"? The Independent system worked fine for 60 years or whatever.

I'm surprised no one responded to this. In my opinion, this would set off a chain of events that would lead to total realignment of the five major conferences that would survive. FSU, Miami, Georgia Tech and Clemson would all be in play for the SEC to get to 16 teams. The Big XII would look for at least two more teams. The ACC would need to respond to the possible poaching of four of their teams, which would have to likely come from the Big East and/or C-USA (ECU?).Of course it is just a rumor and the wheels aren't moving yet but this could be possibly HUGE news for the college sports landscape.
5/1/2010 10:10:14 AM
^Seems like ECU basketball is nowhere close to where it would need to be?
5/1/2010 11:29:09 AM
Considering they let us stay in the ACC, that isn't a very good argument

Still don't think GT would ever move to the SEC, I doubt Clemson would either but I'm not nearly as confident about them. Also, I don't know why a conference would want to have 16 teams. 12 seems like the optimal number.[Edited on May 1, 2010 at 11:45 PM. Reason : ]

There are some articles floating around that I don't feel like looking for right now that show the long term potential revenues of a 16 team super conference and while each school would take a hit in the short term the long term is >>>>>>>> over a 12 team conference. Also, the Big 10 brings in money that the ACC would have wetdreams about. It's amazing.
