Is going to rule.

From David Simon, writer/creator/producer of hands down the greatest TV show of all time.

The Bunk, Lester Freamon, John Goodman, and Steve Zahn have been cast. The show is about musicians, chefs, etc. attempting to rebuild New Orleans' culture in the aftermath of Katrina. Starts airing on HBO (who else?) on April 11.

^^hopefully we get some more classic Bunk moments, like when he was wasted and tried to burn all his clothes because he thought his wife would smell the scent of pussy on him.

^lotta good features on him leading up to the show:

for two

and you know man, you really need to get hbo and support this show if you like it. you can cancel when it is done. They had to fight to keep The Wire on the air b/c of its crap ratings. HBO can only give simon free rides so often before he has to start getting some ratings...

spare me the lecture, I don't have $100+ a month to spend on digital cable right now but I've bought a few of The Wire seasons on DVD and both of David Simon's books so I'm not feeling particularly guilty about it.

I plan to watch the pilot this weekend, i just couldn't stay up Sunday night for the entire thing. Really looking forward to it though.

and for The Wire lovers, DirecTV just released a statement saying they are going to air ALL 5 seasons of The Wire uncut, unedited, commercial free and in HD on the 101 starting in July!

not trolling here. just watched the premier tonight. why do you say it was exhilarating? I really didn't see much more than setting up characters around the first parade after a flood. exhilarating would be one of the last words that came to mind for me. honestly, didn't make me want to watch another episode - I felt no hook of emotion or plot. i did, however, feel like it did capture the overall atmosphere of post Katrina new orleans

^Honestly my reaction was as much visceral as it was intellectual...the characters and dialogue both had a verisimilitude that was immediately engrossing. I could certainly see how someone could be less than exhilarated by the pilot, in the same way that no one could have foreseen that The Wire would go on to become one of the greatest TV series of all time based on McNulty bucking the chain of command in The Wire's pilot. I guess what I'm trying to say is that David Simon is building towards something that is bigger and more important than the obvious themes and easy victories of a "New Orleans is a down and out city on the rebound" type of storyline.

i love New Orleans and have been there a half of dozen times but i felt a little bored about the hour and half long episode.

i will give anything that comes on HBO the benefit of the doubt and the acting was superb even though i thought some of it was really slow at times.

there were some great Steve Zahn moments in the second ep, notably the chicken sacrifice and when he revealed his favorite breakfast spot to the tourists only to realize he had just ruined his own chance at a peaceful breakfast.

Just watched the most recent episode. Fantastic. David Simon develops characters--three-dimensional, believable, intriguing, self-destructive characters--like no other. I already love the characters of Davis, the street musician, Batiste, Chief, etc.

I love how the street musician guy (cracked out James McAvoy) is totally passing at the rich people party and then he's like MICE WERE EATING PEOPLE, DOOD and totally blows it.

Several great moments/scenes from last night's episode:

--When Albert is leaving the insurance office and he asks the insurance officer: "Man, how you get to sleep at night?"
Insurance officer: "I drink."
--When Delmond's agent (aka PREZ) is trying to convince him to go on the tour, Delmond says: "I been to Portland, nice people...but you know they clap on the 1 and 3?" (then he gives the funniest "I mean, come on" face ever)
--When Slim Charles (can't remember the character's name) says to Ladonna's grandmother: "Respectfully, ma'am...I know how to jail. Your boy don't."
--Two scenes with Sonny-one where the other keyboardist takes his place on stage and then he watches for a little bit and gets high and then when he comes to Annie and she's playing with that band (with a keyboardist). Sonny is very interesting--he lets all the praise he gets about his performing roll off him while dwelling on the potential failures of his music career.

Anyway...I'm already not afraid to say that this is the best show currently on TV. David Simon is a god.

Yes

If they drew the misfortune of driving up on locals, they got similar treatment -- the only people who really yukked it up with them were the out-of-state contractors. It was good to let people get a glimpse of just how bad things were, but if I were driving one of those buses I'd have ignored every request to "stop and talk to those guys."

As a NOLA native, I really appreciate the show, I feel like I could know the characters. Khandi Alexander has the black NOLA middle-class woman role down pat. Kim Dickens feels like an executive chef. Steve Zahn sells himself as very proud to know a lot about New Orleans. Wendell Pierce (went to the same high school I did, albeit 20 or so years earlier) sells musicianship.

They really did their homework and sought people who know New Orleans to get this show rolling properly. K-Ville (the last show to focus on New Orleans) absolutely ear-fucked itself in this respect. Shitty accents, gumbo parties, shrimp po-boys for breakfast, and making a 30-minute trip in 3 minutes will not sell the locals, and if you can't sell locals on a show that focuses on their story, you can't sell your show. Back to Treme, there have been some pallid drops and anachronisms (for example, there's no way Dickens' character had a fresh Hubig's pie on her, as that business did not re-open until 2006) but if you're not a local, you don't know that, and locals for the most part didn't view it as a hiccup big enough to criticize.

Pallid is a synonym for bland. In that context, it's one of those things where (for example) the locals know why "Red beans? It's not even Monday" is a humorous line, and so will others that are keen on New Orleans culture, but it felt a bit forced.
