The lovely navy is giving me a 5 week paid vacation to Norfolk (22MAR-26APR).

What is there to do up there?

I'm going to stay in Norfolk as much as possible. They're giving me 250 bucks for gas each way, 61/day per diem, and covering the cost of the barracks (13/day).. so i'm going to try to pocket all that I can.

Man, I used to live there for a few years. I know of all of these awesome venues, restaurants, clubs, malls, etc....

But I also think youre somewhat of a dick. I would let that slide though.
However, the fact that you navy bastards make that area a shithole whenever you come through pretty much gaurantees me not sharing my vast wealth of knowledge with you.

I understand. I hate 99.7% of the people in the navy. They're idiots and don't know how to handle themselves. (this goes for all uniformed services) They think serving in the military not only makes them more important than everybody else but they think they should be able to get away with things. I try not to associate myself with them when I leave base.

Sounds about like what I do.

I tried to become section leader a few times (to look good on my STA-21 package).. but they always give it to the shitbags who go to mast so that they can get their rank back

if you like history / historical stuff you can do colonial williamsburg / yorktown (2) / jamestown (2)

ummmm, there is a good art museum the chrysler art museum http://www.chrysler.org/

the strip/boardwalk is a little interesting at least at first..., there's an aquarium around there that's pretty good too.

Ey yo, guy. Details guy. Gotta watch the details on the interwebs. <_<

Anyway, yeah, if you're bored there's a group of folks, including myself, who go and hang out on tuesday nights if you're staying anywhere near P-town. If you're just looking for places to go, grab some other civilized officer types and go to granby street in downtown norfolk. If you're looking to get shitfaced and make an ass of yourself with a bunch of obnoxious navy types, go to O'malley's irish pub in norfolk. That was a blast when we were there, but it's not suited for much of anything besides getting shitfaced, singing along with songs, getting more shitfaced, then stumbling home. For more refined food and drinks, hit up any number of places along granby street that aren't filled with loud ass sailors.

Hop the ferry to p-town and hit up some of the venues on high street as well. Don't bring any obnoxious navy types there unless you go to some place like thumper's or paddy's.

[Edited on March 4, 2010 at 5:11 PM. Reason : Good shopping at MacArthur center, too. Big mall in downtown. Recently banned youngins.]

hmm...

good chicken wings, maybe a good bar with lots of beer choices, some place to go to mingle with the wimminz, and maybe some place(s) to go for cheap entertainment?

And a place to get away from navy

There are no women in norfolk. The ones that are there probably don't want to talk with navy types anyway (they've had enough of that shit already).

Good bar with lots of beer choices would be many of the places on granby. I know the bier garden in portsmouth is absolutely worth a visit (avoid the tunnel, hop the ferry, walk to high st, have fun at the bier garden). For cheap entertainment, consider seeing a movie at the commodore with some not goddamned obnoxious friends, because that place is cheap and classy as fuck. http://www.commodoretheatre.com For $18 or so I saw a movie, had a pitcher of diet coke, and a huge thing of dip and chips all to myself. Way cheaper than the movies at MacArthur Center and it's an old school theater.

As far as wing specials go... I'm not sure. Check out granby st though. I know paddy's in P-town has good wing specials.

it is the quite possibly shittiest place on earth.

If New Jersey is the asshole of the world, then Norfolk is the poo-stained, unwashed taint.

i recommend that you stay in, find a few good books, and try not to let that place suck you dry.

also, chanello's is the cheapest pizza, and it's not bad for the price.

Food:

21st street deli - 21st street
Chicho's (pizza)- Brambleton, right across from ODU (tons of college kids)
Cogans (pizza) - Near 21st street
Mi Hogar (mexican food) - Granby street (not downtown)
Higher Heights (carribean soul food) - Granby street (not downtown)

Bars:
Chicho's - Brambleton, right across from ODU (tons of college kids)
New Belmont - Near 21st street
Baxters (sports bar) - Downtown on Granby. There's a VIP upstairs too, if you know the right people
Taphouse - In ghent, in between 21st street, granby street, and Brambleton. TONS of beer. Great food.
Bar Norfolk - Downtown. I forget where.... BIG navy hangout

Clubs:
Club sevens - Downtown on Granby
Granby Theatre - Downtown on Granby

Venues:
The Norva - Downtown near Granby. That's all you need to know

IMAX: In hampton, near the university

Also, if it's open, Busch Gardens is like 45 minutes away in williamsburg.
Aquarium in Va Beach. Pretty nice.
Waterside is in downtown norfolk. Nice to walk around...
Ghent has a lot of cool shit if you just walk around.

Beaches:
There's Va beach - Nice to kick around during the day. I wouldn't hang around the strip at night if I were you...
There's a beach in Norfolk - shitty for everything except for fishing on the pier.

Museums:
U.S.S. Wisconsin is in downtown norfolk
Chrysler Museum is in downtown norfolk
The Attucks - historical play house... Named after Crispus Attucks

I'll try to think of some other shit...

ALSO

For the love of fucking GOD, please don't go around Norfolk acting like the typical navy asshole. That city is so fucking sick of that shit. I can't tell you how many fights I got in/almost got in with navy assholes downtown. Leave that wartime - I need to fight everything that moves - attitude on base. That shit will get you shot.

Word. I saw many a great show there.

If you buy the pre-show tickets, there's a bar that backs up to The Norva. Perfect place to get wastey face... grab a bite to eat... and walk through their back door, and into the back door of The Norva before the show starts

i've always wanted to eat/drink there before hand, but it seems like we're always running late.

i'm assuming thats how folks wind up with good spots on the balcony.

usually the right side of the balcony is sectioned off as VIP but the rest of the balcony is fair game

first, comparing Norfolk to New Jersey is just laughable. something shitty clearly happened to you there, because as far as I'm concerned, Norfolk is one of my favorite places to kick it. Va Beach is an absolute shithole. There are a couple cool bars on Granby St, and a couple in Gent. Also some great restaurants around there. Waterside is shit. You will be murdered there, I don't care what anyone says about the bars there. Steer clear.

and yes, the Norva is one of the best venues in the country, easily.

people from norfolk are pieces of shit.

a building is a building, a bar is a bar, alcohol is alcohol, etc.

it's the people that make norfolk so shitty.

and i respectfully disagree with WillemJoel. One ride down Military Highway in Norfolk will depress the shit out of anyone.

VB is much better (kempsville what what).

but really, i was so glad to be out of that area when i left. the 7 cities can suck my left one.

I hung with some of the best people I've ever known when I lived there, and I also grew up 30 mins away. I tended to know of, and stay away from places where thugs and navy pricks hung out, however. And yes, you can make SEVERAL turns in norfolk and become depressed. Welcome to metropolitan areas. Va Beach (i'm only really talking of the social areas, beach, etc) is shit.

as far as i'm concerned, the navy was the best part of that place.

i wish they'd pull their ships out, put 'em somewhere else, and let that cest pool sink into a giant puddle of it's own defilement.
