The Office of Information Technology is trying to start a new group that asks students what they think about IT at NC State. This is your chance to come out and let your opinions be heard! The vice chancellor for Information Technology and CIO, Marc Hoit, will be participating in the meetings. He will be available to listen to student feedback, answer questions and address concerns. Our first meeting will be this Thursday, March 4th from 5:30-7:00pm in room 1608 of the Carmichael Rec Center. Pizza, salad and drinks will be served! You can learn more and follow future meetings with our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=359309608202&ref=mf

IT at NC State means all the technology services we have at State. And those we don't have yet. Our first meeting we plan to talk some about labs on campus and Google Apps coming this fall, but we also want time for the students to bring up their own topics. The group will eventually be a bit more formalized but for now we just want to get students out and listen to what they have to say.

So is torrenting still cool on campus?
3/2/2010 2:31:36 PM
It depends on what you're torrenting.

more storage space --Being worked on, will be done after email rollover finishedmore email space/move it to gmail -- Done (gmail effective currently for limited beta, mass beta in April)better wireless coverage -- Being worked on; blame your dept/dept that owns your bldg you in, for not paying what they need to for this in their spaces/common areasall distributed software license info/files online -- Being worked on, some cant be due to limitations with how AD works. learn to work with SAS and get the licenses out on time -- unknownbring back wolfcall -- why?? If this is related to Vista load times in the Eos labs itll be fixed when Win7 is loaded in a month or so. I would like to see more students hired for more IT jobs. You got rid of the full resnet staff, most of the classtech guys, and Comtech dont hire for $*!^ (which is what I would love to work for).FREE FOOD

NCSU is also going the gmail route? Nice. Virginia Tech just switched theirs over not too long ago.I will vouch in general for student meetings that invite high-level guests as having a direct influence on decisions that are made. Be curious what ideas students can present to help improve IT on campus.

I wish I could find an IT job on campus. That would be ftw.

i could read the entire story of jesus in the time it takes vista machines to load. currently the process is login, walk down hall to get drink, go pickup hw, swing buy professors office, talk with friends, knit a scarf, sit down to watch the login process finish.
3/3/2010 12:47:02 AM
So come out and say all this to Marc Hoit. You don't get a chance to talk to a VC everyday.Feel free to share this invite. We'll have plenty of food!

more storage space --Being worked on, will be done after email rollover finishedgood... but too late for me. at least future students will benefit more email space/move it to gmail -- Done (gmail effective currently for limited beta, mass beta in April)signed up for beta... but too late again better wireless coverage -- Being worked on; blame your dept/dept that owns your bldg you in, for not paying what they need to for this in their spaces/common areasthey just recently increased coverage; it was more of a remark for other departments... so do I blame every department whose building I ever had a class in with bad coverage? all distributed software license info/files online -- Being worked on, some cant be due to limitations with how AD works.over my head on that onelearn to work with SAS and get the licenses out on time -- unknown&AFAIK this was taken care of when NCSU's setinit expired last timeif it's a problem, let me know and i'll ask aroundwell the newest version still hasn't been released at ncsu yet (for distribution)... and apparently each year the license renewal is a pain/issue...bring back wolfcall -- why?? If this is related to Vista load times in the Eos labs itll be fixed when Win7 is loaded in a month or so.&wolfcall makes baby jesus crynot for vista issues or anything. are you saying it will be back for W7? I need access from my personal computers (XP & W7), not labs. and wolfcall was by far the fastest for access. I'm using expandrive now, it's ok, but not nearly as fast as wolfcall was.]
3/3/2010 5:16:42 PM
you got expandrive to work with win7?
3/3/2010 5:23:17 PM
^lol, yeh. I'm using it on XP x86 & W7 x64 with no functional problems. The problem is performance, as it's often slow to open directories & files, save files, etc).I did have an issue with it on Vista x86, though I think it was just a bad license file... I was sent another license and it worked fine after that.]

How about you make it so it doesn't literally take 8 minutes to print off a single page pdf in the EB1 building. It's 2010. Two-thousand-and-fucking-ten. It shouldn't be quicker for me to walk over to a redhat machine in EBII and walk back to EBI. I've timed it.rabble rabble rabble
3/3/2010 8:16:55 PM
logging into a windows computer in EBII takes FOREVER. it's on the order of minutes. I'll usually log into a VLC session on my netbook (ends up being windows xp) to avoid having to login to a lab pc. It is THAT bad. This should start matlab on a redhat box. I'll be trying it tomorrow.add matlab78matlab &Oh and concerning above :I've been using expandrive on windows 7 for the past week with no problems. I run simulations and save files rather slowly. You might be doing something much more intensive.[Edited on March 3, 2010 at 8:45 PM. Reason : . jchill that was hilarious. ]

Your problems in EB should be directed to ITECS.They’ll get address more quickly than going to this Advisory Group meeting.

yeah, what ^ said.fwiw, those may not be labs that are run by the Office of Information Technology.http://oit.ncsu.edu/unity-labs/locations -- why is WRAP authentication required to view the lab locations page?eos labs - http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/labs/[Edited on March 3, 2010 at 8:59 PM. The Vista problem we know about (I work for Itecs) its not getting fixed till we deploy 7 in a bit. There are at least 2 if not more linux machines and solaris machines as well in each of the eb1 labs...As far as wifi, with most bldgs that a teaching dept owns/manages (eg like chemistry or CSC or math), comtech covered half the bldg ideally. The department is responsible for paying/covering the rest of the way. Bitch at your dept for more money allocated to this if you wanna see a bldg covered. Comtech only really did any labs (computer labs that is) and common areas and large lecture classrooms. Small ones are dept's responsibility. Wolfcall is still online if you know where to look. Ill see if I can find a link for you.
3/3/2010 10:29:54 PM
i would have never deployed vista. what were the key features that warranted the login fiasco? followed by what is it , 3 random command prompt windows "DO NOT CLOSE!!".

How did the first one go?
3/8/2010 3:39:41 PM
First session went really well. We had about ten folks come out and talk to the CIO about everything from labs to the portal to where ETF money goes. You can read more about it in the Technician actually: http://www.technicianonline.com/news/oit-centralizes-feedback-with-student-group-1.2183405Next session is Tuesday, April 13th. The location will be announced in a few days- we're trying to find a better room. We'll be having food again and this time we'll be talking about Student-Owned computing and labs, with time to talk about the Google roll-out if there are questions. As always there will also be free time for folks to talk about whatever is on their minds, so come with questions.Everyone's welcome!
