Anyone got any experience? Is it worth doing? I'm sick of the damn charge pipes moving around when the engine torques and creating boost leaks. I'm also a fan of anything that gets the giant FMIC out of the bumper. I know the plumbing will get a ton shorter. Is the volume delta going to be noticeable in response time / LAGGGG (i know its better in theory)?I've seen a lot of factory supercharged cars sport them. I dont know if I have seen any turblown ones with A2W. I dont really look for it though!Ray? Zx?[Edited on March 2, 2010 at 12:38 AM. Reason : .]

I've never messed with one, but doesn't the water temp need to be lower than the charge air temp for it to be effective? I know water cooling is used for factory oil coolers on some cars. The only turbo car I can think of with a factory air to water intercooler is the Syclone/Typhoon.

I'm under the same assumption. How hard is it to keep a tank of water under typical IATs? I could place a radiator for the water tank in the FMIC spot, lol.Another consideration is the fact that when running 20psi the pressure drop across the A2A FMIC may be getting pretty rough. My FMIC is really small and I'm sure crap (used ebay, lol).

I dont know about cars but they are huge out here for Sleds. Pretty much everyone that rides back country has one. HM Turbos be killing it.

it looks like the veyron has A2W IC's and they are mounted directly above the engine. if google is to be believed its water capacity is around 15L!

i know a couple people that are using them on their shitty 1.8ts[Edited on March 2, 2010 at 4:35 PM. Reason : .]
3/2/2010 4:34:44 PM
hahahah, you need about 30psi to get 250hp out of a 1.8T so i can see a good use for one
3/2/2010 4:39:40 PM
yeah..but at least my vw friends understand the difference between psi and cfm and how those affect power.
3/2/2010 4:40:16 PM
yeah and how it relates to a horrible head design.vwvortex forum is providing good examples. so this has helped me a bit.[Edited on March 2, 2010 at 4:46 PM. Reason : ive sat shotgun datalogging a 1.8T with stock turbo and boost controller for multiple hours. ]

boost controller on stock turbo? you obviously dont know what you're doing.

it seems like the PWR cores are the most popular from what i've seenmake sure you get a core that will handle your power leveli dont particularly care for awic, but mostly because of all of the extra stuff you need makes the system way more complicated. i will say that the guy who i know that has one on his 1.8t crap said he spent less than a nice air-air setup. he also made a lot more than 250 at 23psi some drag race guys use these with the radiator in a cooler that they fill with ice water. i guess that's one way to get below ambient, but not really feasible for a daily or anything you will be driving for extended amounts of time.

It did seem to add a little power. The spool isnt fast enough for that turbo to have been maxed out. Actually its pretty laggy TBH.good good good BLAMMO, limp [Edited on March 2, 2010 at 7:35 PM. Reason : ]

holy god those intercoolers are $texas. I think the one I have now was 100$ with all the charge pipes .
3/2/2010 7:37:12 PM
you hit limp because the ecu freaked out when it saw too much boost (actual boost vs requested boost).. that's why it is the wrong way.there are other cores you can get, but not for $100
3/2/2010 10:44:35 PM
so.. you can get over 100% efficiency with these things if you put ice in the water reservoir

subaru had a little water spray setup that mists onto the intercooler in some earlier carsalso, something about alcohol cools the charge, too, but I'm no turbo guy
3/4/2010 8:18:25 AM
^well the alcohol evaporates really fast, so it'd help transfer heat away asap when sprayed on a FMIC.
3/4/2010 9:02:20 AM
that may help.. meth injection would be a better bet if you're going to add something
3/4/2010 10:16:49 AM
I'm a little worried about the super cheap air to water intercoolers. If the A2A springs a hole, i just suck in unfiltered air. I've driven the car for a week with no air filter period before. If the W2A springs a leak...i guess if its small enough ill get a temporary charge cool effect due to evaporation like TKE mentioned. If its a big leak....lol....k24 all motor here we come .
