just launched my website and I'm like the #8 result

now i had someone else design the site in wordpress and even that i'm having trouble doing little changes with so i ask
1) is getting to #1 something i can do on my own, ie not terribly difficult
2) how much does it cost to get someone to do it for you?

even if it's not difficult, if its cheap enough i think id rather save myself the time it would take for me to learn

Generate better content. That will get you to the top. Google page rank is very resistant to "gimmicks".

man I wish that were true

I still see sites rank well for highly competitive terms using nothing but comment spam for backlinks and dummy text on-page

hahaha yea google gets owned by link farms and other gimmicks for anything that doesn't contain purchased adwords. If you want to be ranked you need to #1 shell out cash #2 get more clicks than the other people shelling out for your adwords.

^^ It's mostly true for sites that stay at number 1. The link farms get pruned often; just not often enough.

Posted something similar in Old School, but figured I might get better info/feedback here:

Basically I'm a solo attorney that's done fairly well simply on referrals. I have a somewhat shitty website that a friend did for free, but I can't remember a client ever saying they found me online.

I'm close to bringing a friend into my practice who works in an area of law that I have no experience in (Workers Compensation). He works for a large defense firm and can bring over several insurance company clients, but ultimately he wants us to build a larger Plaintiff's practice. Our big question is, can we get clients?? We're trying to avoid straight-up advertising and are looking more into SEO and pay-per-click stuff.

We've both been researching companies that specialize in developing and maintaining websites for attorneys/firms and handling the SEO. We've found mixed results as far as online testimonials and I just had lunch with a good law school buddy who said he wasted thousands on a similar company. I'd like to get a few more personal experiences before I consider cutting a big check. Obviously there aren't a ton of attorneys on this website (or this section), but I just wondered what everyone's thoughts were on SEO and generating traffic?

At the very least, I should be able to tell if it's working once it gets up and running (I know it's suppose to take several months), because we're starting fresh and will be getting zero Worker's Comp calls in the beginning. But what should I be looking for when I research these companies? For people that have done it, do you find that a lot of your calls are from people that are looking for your type of service, or they were looking for you specifically?

I think that's about it. I'm not against hiring a company/individual (just in case someone wants to offer their services) that doesn't specialize in doing this for lawyers, but I've been attracted to these companies because they also do things like write blogs for your website and link articles that relate to your practice...things that I'm told help with SEO as well as make your website look more impressive.

I'm an extreme noob when it comes to this stuff, BTW...so take that in mind when responding...I probably won't understand what you're saying.

jbrick,

PM me... I do local SEO- not for attorneys, but I can point you in the right direction.

I have a buddy who's a personal injury attorney in FL. He wanted me to do his SEO, but I steered him in the right direction. You need to find someone who specializes in your industry.

There are a lot of snake oil salesmen in SEO (if you haven't already noticed).

Just set yourself up with an auto-poster, a halfway-decent template, and a list of dofollow blogs
