it has a ridiculously large and sprawling map:

that you had to basically memorize

So myself and a friend have been at it for a good 8-10 hours now. It took a long time to figure out that you need 5 missles to open the red doors. The labyrinth and multiple dead-ends are very frustrating. The fact that you start with 30% health is nuts too. We are in the first sub-lair thing near the beginning, it's the grey area that you get to by bombing a bunch of blocks.

I think the worst and most insane thing about the game is what I call "door rape." Enemies follow you through doors as you are helplessly walking through them, and often kill you. These killer bee things will run right into me and kill my ass.

I could be mistaken but the range on the gun is pretty short too, it's really hard to kill some of fast enemies.

The only Metroid game you need to play is Super Metroid

^Super Metroid is the best by far, but the Metroid games on the Game Boy Advance, DS, and GC/Wii are all really good too.

oh now i see why you think its so hard...you've never played it before

just wait until you are at the mother brain and you are just pumping missile after missile trying to take down the zebetites, then you get hit by an energy blast and the zebetite rebuilds itself

great game though

picked up the jumping upgrade, another energy tank, and 3 missile upgrades tonight. Found another one of the zones... it's the one that comes off the purple area. the dead ends are getting pretty frustrating

Metroid was one of the few games that I could never beat as a kid. I finally beat it a few years ago, it was the shit, and it's definitely one of those games that's fun to pick back up once a year or so.

It took me like a year to beat this game as a kid. Probably the hardest game that was still fun I can remember from back then.

the second quest zelda on NES was hard as shit (that is, beat gannon, then all 8 levels moved their entrances with some being hidden for the second quest... enemies took more hits to kill, shit like that).

I dont know how I beat that without the internet for tips..

who is the sick fuck who designed these levels? We spend a bunch of time racking up 400 health and 55 missles, get all the way down to the lowest level (reddish in color I think). Then we go past some lava pits and spend 20 minutes trying to climb up this wall using bombs. Finally we get through the a door and see an energy tank... but as you approach it you fall through the fucking floor. At the bottom is a room with like 200 killer bees that just keeping coming and coming... by then the missles are almost gone and each hit from the bee takes 20 health.

I feel like I can credit old school video games with etching the saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" into my brain. Remember your errors, take note of the tiny details and if things look easier than they aught to be, they aren't.

Man, this is cool as hell someone encountering NES Metroid for the first time. It's like those articles where the 30-somethings have their kids play the games from their childhood. Except the game that arghx is playing doesn't fucking suck.

The funny thing is, I've owned the game for 5 years. Before I would just turn the thing off after 10 minutes from being so frustrated.

just google it...there are a ton of different emulators, and you can find all the NES roms on a lot of different sites...you can get pretty much the whole NES library in like 20 megabytes

ok actually the whole library might be more like 700 megs

I have an emulator called NESTICLE and it works with my USB controller (not sure of the brand, maybe Logitech)

then I got some thing (might've torrented it) called '3539 NES Roms and Emulator', which is yes, over 3500 NES roms...although some of them are custom / modded, but it also has all the real games...the emulator it comes with isn't quite as good as NESTICLE imo though

and the best part about playing a rom on an emulator, is you can save the game at any point

I am playing this oldschool with the passwords and everything. I have to fight the NES blinkies just to play sometimes. I wish my friend had never sold his top loader back in '95

[Edited on March 12, 2010 at 12:12 AM. Reason : I've had emulators but it's just not the same without my 90s tv and the unergonomic controller]

hmm the latest slap in the face: after spending well over an hour racking up energy and missles, and finally climbing back over that wall with bombs

the result was falling down again trying to get that E tank. Made it through a gazillion killer bees and picked up a missile upgrade. climbed up another room and went into a different door. made it all the way to the door and saw another powerup... behind an insurmountable wall . death came soon after that

[Edited on March 14, 2010 at 5:13 PM. Reason : pic of trying to get up that first wall]

bout 99% positive that you can bomb the floor at the beginning of that room. It'll lead you to a crawlspace that will let you roll all the way from the beginning of the room to the other side of that pillar...

found that tunnel and finally got the energy tank. but i got killed on the lower floors of that area... those stupid hopper things combined with killer bees will take so much health from you. even when you have 500 health and 60 missles it's hard to get through, because the hopper thing knock you into the lava and keep pummeling you.
