I'll admit that those 2 were the first I thought of, but mostly because that was just the first that came to mind.

They've done A LOT together, but I don't think it's all great. And you listed a movie that hasn't even been released yet.

Scorsese and De Niro
Cape Fear
Casino
GoodFellas
Mean Streets
New York, New York
Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
The King of Comedy

Fincher and Pitt
Se7en
Fight Club
Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Spielberg and Hanks
The Terminal
Catch me if you can
Saving Private Ryan

Howard and Hanks - not a huge fan of the first 2, but both did well. And the 3rd is great.
The Da Vinci Code
Angels and Demons
Apollo 13

I agree on Howard and Hanks. Apollo 13 is really their only good movie. But Spielberg and Hanks, are you serious? All three of those movies are good.

we will have to agree to disagree on that, sir. Although I definitely wouldn't put that duo as high as Scorsese/DeNiro or Burton/Depp

coppola/brando? (2 of the top 10 american films ever made)
coppola/pacino? (same)

leone/eastwood?

welles/welles?

capra/stewart?

huston/bogart?

i, personally, agree w/ scorcese/deniro

it almost isnt even fair to mention pacino, i mean:
anybody/1970's pacino wins
godfather 1 and 2, serpico, dog day, and justice.

if we're gonna go with director/actor for same character/story then Spielberg and Harrison Ford for just entertainment value of Indiana Jones.

And for directors and actors who aren't the lead - Eastwood and Morgan Freeman

John Ford and John Wayne did a bunch of stuff together.

Hitchcock also did several flicks with Cary Grant.

there are a few listed here that I personally wouldn't count simply because the actor mentioned isn't really a big enough part of the film. For ex. Aronofsky and Margolis - margolis has less than 10 minutes of screen time in The Fountain (that may be generous). Love the movie, but I'm not sure Margolis had anything to do it making it good or bad.

Otherwise, it opens the door for a lot of people who are probably just the director's cousin or something (like Ron Howard's brother, who is in all of his movies).

I fucking hate the Depp/Burton combo. It's the same old shit over and over in terms of freakish behavior. The Mad Hatter basically looks like Depp's Willy Wonka all over again, and if THAT wasn't pedophilic, I don't know what is.

According to wikipedia Greg Mottola directed Superbad. The only other recent movie he's directed was Adventureland (very meh).

Judd Apatow's list is fucking impressive though. Directed:
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Knocked Up
Funny People

Produced the above plus:
The Cable Guy
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
Superbad
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Step Brothers
Pineapple Express
Year One

amongst others

Depp/Burton = not that good

Scissorhands=great
Sleepy Hollow= meh
Wonka= awful
Sweeney Todd= same shitty cockney accent as Pirates movies; not too bad though
Alice in Wonderland= hasn't yet been released but looks to be a steaming pile

I would think that you need more than 1 great movie to make a great combination, and therefore my vote goes with Scorcese/DeNiro

^First off I will say that I think Tim Burton has some great movies and same for Johnny Depp. However, I'm not some huge fanboy and they both have had their missteps.

That being said, everyone ALWAYS forgets Ed Wood which one could argue is their best work together. Tim Burton + Johnny Depp movie that won 2 oscars. I also enjoyed Corpse Bride (but yea I get that it probably doesnt count because it was just "voice acting").

though Jim Sheridan has really dropped off of late, his movies with Daniel Day Lewis are all excellent:

rwoody mentioned it about halfway up. As much as I like that trilogy, it's kind of a one-trick deal in regard to them teaming up.

I'd give them (as a duo) a lot more credit if they at least did a slightly different style of western together.

Correction:

I stated earlier that I thought it was Peter Hunt/Connery who did the early Bond films.

It was Terrence Young (Dr.No, From Russia With Love, Thunderball) that teamed up with Connery in 3 of the first 4 Bond films. Tough to argue with 2 guys that pretty much started an entire genre of film.
