where can i buy plexiglass fairly cheap? needing two pieces approx. 52"x30" and 40"x30"....1/4" - 1/3" thick.
2/19/2010 2:08:58 PM
not sure on cost, but Lowe's has it for sale, you tell them the size and they cut it.
2/19/2010 2:14:42 PM
Just curious, what do you need it for? It doesn't have anything to do with the broken door at DSC does it?
2/19/2010 2:16:35 PM
no. im going to attempt to make a corner computer desk/snake tank combo.heres a rough idea of what im tryin to accomplish... the numbers might be off a little bit, but like i said, this is just a rough draft.
2/19/2010 2:26:08 PM
so where do your legs go underneath the desk?
2/19/2010 2:29:42 PM
no legs.
2/19/2010 2:31:43 PM
you don't have legs?
2/19/2010 2:37:15 PM
oh. hah. sorry. misread. i thought you meant the legs of the computer desk. well the top pieces would extend out more than the walls/plexiglass...giving me some legroom and more room for my keyboard.[Edited on February 19, 2010 at 2:42 PM. Reason : .]

as you can see from the picture, i did kind of try to illustrate that....hah. as best i could on ms paint. i guess the picture was for myself, anyway, so i knew what i was trying to achieve. but both plexiglass pieces are rectangles, and dont angle off in the mid section at the top where they intersect....so the top part of the desk extends out a few inches further than the plexiglass does. if that makes any sense.
2/19/2010 2:41:40 PM
nice idea and all but why on earth would you want snakes by your feet?!creeper
2/19/2010 2:53:30 PM
because it would give me the ability to have a 200-250 gallon enclosure for this snake, without it looking like an eyesore and without it taking up extra floorspace in my bedroom.[Edited on February 19, 2010 at 3:08 PM. Reason : .]

cool idea. I don't care for snakes, but the idea is cool and potentially worthwhile. good luck.lowe's & home depot are all I got

^ hahaha i knew that was coming!thanks, ill check it out.

that's gonna be a big ass piece of furniture. you measure 6' down and 18" out along each wall just to get a good visual idea of how much space it will take up?Assuming you have a heat lamp, have you considered wiring it in so you can just flip a switch on the side of the desk or something to turn it on?Have you considered using plexiglass for the side door and even the tops? And to answer your question, you can try J & H Glass. They'll also do some fabricating, so if you need it cut a certain way or holes drilled, they'll do it for you if you can't. Lowes/HD will probably be cheaper for just a sheet... but they're not going to do as much if you can't do it yourself and won't have the same selection of colors if you want something other than the norm.

yeah ive considered all this stuff...just didnt mention it on this thread because....well....thats not why i posted this thread. plexiglass is pretty expensive. im not really looking to pay 2x4 times as much as i would with wood (blah tongue twister) to cover the top and/or back with plexiglass....and i still want it to look like a piece of furniture...plus i dont want all the wires exposed from the computer and heatlamps, which will be mounted on the underside of the '"top" of the desk....and the hinges will be on the top sections of the desk for easy cleaning and bulb changes. i dont want any colored plexiglass...just clear. my bedroom is a decent size (12'x22')...i did measure it out already, and i have more than enough room in the area i want to put it. i would probably just plug the heatlamp cord into a timer like i have for my fishtank lights.

There used to be a place called Plastics and Fiberglass on Capital Blvd. I don't know if it is still there.
2/19/2010 4:56:21 PM
^^ gotcha, i was just curious..^ pretty sure I called that place a couple of months ago for some prices on stuff - so they should still be there
2/19/2010 5:09:59 PM
i work at perry glass in elizabeth city. we cut and sell plexiglass. 1/4" glass runs cheaper though. but if you want plexiglass you can let me know. i come to raleigh most weekends.
2/21/2010 8:06:59 PM
check out a place called Piedmont Plastics. They have plexiglass. You may also want to consider polycarbonate....sometimes it can be cheaper. http://www.piedmontplastics.com/
2/21/2010 9:05:55 PM
it does not have to be plexiglass necessarily....but i figured it would hold up better, especially if i accidentally kicked it with my feet. maybe?
2/21/2010 10:12:56 PM
glass places can get plexi also. i have a friend that works at glass doctor and he picked up a couple small peices for a sandblast cabinet
2/22/2010 2:13:40 PM
What are you planning to do for a heat source? That desk is creative, but it's gonna be really uncomfortable unless you have a considerable tabletop coming off and giving you some edge.
2/28/2010 5:04:28 PM
what a ridiculous idea... there is nowhere for your feet, and you won't be able to see the damn tank very well. why not just mount a larger tank ABOVE the desk so you can see it and still have room for your feet???
2/28/2010 5:20:20 PM
^^ i already answered this ITT.^ im not building this desk to fit someone like you. so im pretty sure ill have enough leg room....but thanks for calling my idea "ridiculous".and the tank/desk is going to be 6x6....are you fucking blind??? how could you not be able to see this tank well???as i mentioned above, i posted this thread asking where i could buy plexiglass....not to know your opinions on why i need plexiglass.if you're rude, ill dish it right back.anyway, i found plexiglass, thanks to the help of some of the people ITT./thread[Edited on February 28, 2010 at 6:36 PM. 2/28/2010 7:44:39 PM
^^there is absolutely no room for legs, no matter how big, small, tall, short, hairy, or smooth they are, so unless you have no legs whatsoever, the design is flawed.
2/28/2010 7:47:59 PM
hmmmm guess soooo..i guess this computer desk is "flawed", too huh?considering that's what im making...but it'll be longer on each end. and there will be no keyboard pull out area.sooo if you actually read this entire thread and my responses, you would have known how i would have answered yours and other peoples "leg room" issue....rather than just looking at my shitty ms paint drawing.[Edited on February 28, 2010 at 7:59 PM. ^i mean, it is a rather awkward design. If you have more of an overhang in the corner it would work better.
2/28/2010 8:30:18 PM
2/28/2010 9:06:51 PM
i sat at a computer desk with 0" overhang for about 2yrs. It really wasn't a major issue for what I used my computer for back then.[Edited on February 28, 2010 at 9:15 PM. Reason : at]
