Yeah. I don't really want to deal with someone selling one right now. I'm not going to throw a private owner for a loop with my current train of thought.

and yeah i agree with that. full tbe. i bet it doesn't even have cats. full sound system. no thank you.
2/17/2010 3:28:52 PM
Honestly, with cars like that there is no reason to not keep it stock. I had an 05 STI and it had plenty of power stock. Too many evo/STi owners just bolt on crap because thats what they read online and because they want to be dyno queens. There is really no reason to do any of that unless you track it a lot and even then theres not much that needs to be done.
2/17/2010 3:31:27 PM
i think you forgot the difference between fact and opinion
2/17/2010 4:01:45 PM
Either keep it stock or go all the way with 800hp. GTFO with that 100 hp gain shit.amirite?fwiw, yeah, they are amazing stock. It's going to be hard finding one unmolested though.

I found a 2004 sti. Stock other than a cai. At one time it did have catless tbe, but its been reverted back to OEM.

not this one by chance is it? http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/1578219399.html

I don't recall all the reasons why the 05 was an improvement to the 04 but off the top of my head:the headlights/taillights didn't have that white/chrome background (ugly IMO). The 05 was blacked out.More powerStock boost, oil temp, voltage gauges. (if you care for that sort of thing)Thats just what I can remember from previously owning one back in 05.
2/17/2010 4:56:05 PM
Nope. Well it is that one. But that guy doesn't have it anymore.[Edited on February 17, 2010 at 5:12 PM. Reason : ]

Today, we got to start the car, EXCITING.PS: Porsche: 5 x 130mm since the 60s.

^ true story. long story short. the car is now at chris leith chevy. i've been out there 3 times to test drive it. all 3 times it has not happened. fuck that car. fuck that dealer. if anyone wants an sti, go for it!
2/17/2010 9:43:55 PM
And why haven't you been able to test drive it?
2/17/2010 10:30:21 PM
ummm1. car was in the shop being reverted to pass state inspection.2. car was being given back to owner because his loan fell through.3. car was locked behind the maintenance gate, and the service manager had left for the evening.[Edited on February 17, 2010 at 10:42 PM. Reason : ]

Drive an evo before you buy an sti. I wanted an sti, too, but after driving both, I can't imagine getting the sti.
2/17/2010 11:07:20 PM
i was there...at least we cut the engine on...the fumes smelled like it could possibly run well......
2/17/2010 11:57:01 PM
n/m, I see you have given up on that car. there are many sketchy things about it I was going to point out.[Edited on February 18, 2010 at 1:55 AM. Reason : n/m]

Disclaimer: I'm biased, I like cars that are edgy, and generally involving/hard to drive. I have dozens of hours of experience driving and riding in M3s, WRXs, 911s including several back to back sessions on track and otherwise, which I believe are at some levels comparable to the STi/EVO. My time DRIVING an Evo hard is limited to about 25 mins on the street though I have a lot of time in several on track, and more hours riding on the street than I wish I had. Evos are amazing to drive, but let's not forget that they're the epitome of economy car +crazy tuner package. Everything on them feels like the cheap POS that they are, they're loud and buzzy, bouncy, get bad fuel economy with a ridiculously tiny tank and have sub par everything, except things involving the "direct" driving experience. And ooooh that experience. I'd like to flog another one just to be sure but I could not believe how much fun the one I drove was. Yes, yes I want one, mark my words I will own one, but jeez what a giant pile of dog poo that car is. It's painful to spend time in/with unless you're driving it hard. Makes me mad that a car that pure is not coming from BMW, and really to get that hardcore you have no choices in the used car market for anywhere w/in $30k or so of it's price. To recap, get the STi. You'd hate life w/an Evolator.
2/18/2010 3:02:06 AM
^ agreed on every point, except that I don't think that the STi would be much more liveable, and if that's what you want, you need a 330i or M3, not an STi or Evo.

2/18/2010 8:57:40 AM
I'll buy that, but I don't think the STi is enough better to justify it not driving nearly as well...not with that type of car, where the whole point is to be a focused driver's car. They're both going to suck terribly compared to your M3 at everything except for the performance attributes. If you're going to buy a car that sucks at everything except being one hell of a wild ride (well, they both also have sedan practicality, pretty big trunks, and AWD, but they're equal in those regards), I think you should get the one that really is AWESOME at the one thing those cars are really meant to do. The areas that the STi beats the Evo in are so marginal that it doesn't come close to overshadowing how far it falls short in the driving category.Otherwise, I'd stick with a BMW of some flavor....or maybe a 996, though I've never driven one.* side note: if power is your thing, and you buy a IX, it will run in the high 11s for about $1500 worth of easy bolt ons...maybe $1000 if you really find a good deal on a used exhaust/DP. The VIII and the STi are pretty tuneable, of course, but not like the IX.

I don't knock on bolt-on mods. They're probably the easiest and safest mods you can do, while keeping it relatively stock. A TBE is VERY common. As a matter of fact, if you see a WRX/STI make rumbly noises, it has to have a bolt on TBE (or catback).Changes from 2004 to 2005, is that the STi gets...

i do not enjoy the way the 3 split grill looks.2004-2005 are a tad bit below the hatch in looks for me.
2/18/2010 9:46:45 AM
Most first impressions of the 3-split grill are ... but it'll grow on you. It grew on me. Also, it looks better in real life. When the '06 first came out and I saw the pics, I thought it was FUGLY. But, then I saw some in real life. And it wasn't that bad. To each his own I guess.[Edited on February 18, 2010 at 9:52 AM. Reason : "real life" == "in person" ... to avoid confusion ]

i still think the 06-07s fronts are fugly. i think the 04-05 are the hottest. sometimes i wish i still had my bugeye.

Evo VIII's have already turned into DSM's. those cars are already completely trashed now. And I don't like how dated the engine design is compared to the 04 STi. It doesn't even have drive by wire or any kind of variable valve timing, which Mitsu corrected in later models.
2/18/2010 12:46:52 PM

Blah, the STi is quite a bit more comfortable and quieter, + it's not "buzzy", it certainly feels more solid than an EVO. While I'm at it, Mark, you're quick to call your car more hardcore and quote everything Top Gear says about it, would you happen to still remember the part where they choose the STi if they had to live w/the car? The 911 is my favorite car. I intend and hope to not be without one for long, finances permitting. I can admit though that I had more fun in that EVO than I have driving a car in quite some time. This doesn't make me forget how absolutely horrible it feels riding in one to go anywhere. Here's the thing, the EVO is a numb car. It's responsive, yes, but it lacks feedback. The /// is not as responsive, but has better/more useful feedback. To me, the 911's better than both, but obviously with the lack of space/utility, it won't cut it for everyone. Also, a stock 911 comes with horrible seats, and a rather soft suspension. It's cool that the EVO is ready to track out of the box, just add pads and tires. I commend Mitsu for building such a car, it's a rare breed. Continue drinkin' the hateradeā¢.

All you BMW /// owners are such princesses. I drive a car because of its performance, I couldn't careless if it can put a tampon in my sandy vagina while driving.
2/19/2010 10:54:20 AM
^lol, i love it^^while its true the 911 has a small trunk it does have those two worthless back seats. Don't they make for plenty of cargo space?
2/19/2010 10:58:40 AM
^^ In that case you should gut it, remove the AC, remove the heater core, and put it on race springs.
