I'm looking to take a weekend getaway from raleigh soon with a gal. What's there to do this time of year within a 6-8 hr drive? All suggestions appreciated

DC is good. Skiing in the mountains if you're into that. Charleston. Atlanta sucks imo.

charleston, obx, asheville/mt pisgah, and DC are my standbys for a "weekend" trip (I aim to have at least three days wherever)Once you start talking a 8 hours of drive time, you're effectively ruling out that destination as a weekend trip.

the beach is fantastic in winter

OBX is great during the winter - its not nearly as crowded but still as pretty. Plus ocean/sound front rooms are cheaper The mountains and DC are nice too

Mountains. There's a lot of shopping and cool stuff in Pigeon Forge, TN, however, it may be out of season for a lot of the shows. Still, quite, serene... Great place to get away from the world and wind down.

if you are into camping, i cant say enough about the brown mtn beach area along wilson creek about 20 miles north of Morgantan...the whole surrounding area offers many trails, waterfalls, and camping destinations, and all are amazing
