I have a very old KLH receiver that handles my dolby digital surround sound.when I run my directtv receiver to my tv (hdmi) back to my receiver (optical), the receiver recognizes the dolby digital signal and flashes the dolby digital logo plus the 5.1 speakrs involved on its interfaceI run my upconvert dvd player and it does the same damn thing.yet, when I run my xbox (via hdmi) to my tv, it sends a 5.1 speaker "Signal" back to the receiver but I never, ever get that dolby digital logo. I do hear surround sound, I definitely don't hear the same quality, however. I've checked everything internally on the xbox... is their something I'm missing?

Not all Xbox 360 games have Dolby Digital audio. Look at the back of the game box at the features (white boxes with green text). If it doesn't say "in-game Dolby (R) Digital" then it doesn't have it.It looks like most of my games have it but with notable exceptions, like Halo 3. The Halo 3 audio is probably PCM, but it still comes out in surround.

ok, this probably sounds stupid, but..so if it's PCM audio, could it still be 5.1 surround--just not dolby digital?I mean, I know it's surround sound, I just don't have an easy way to test R(L) and R(R)... I guess I could start launching mininukes in fallout 3 and turning aroundhaha

I can't find a definitive answer online as to what audio formats the games output.

I guess I'll just deal with it until I can afford a new receiver.... not that this 2003 dinosaur is really doing that bad of a job. I can't believe I once used to use my tv's speakers.

My receiver only has analog (including discrete 5.1) inputs!
