The other thread was supposed to be about Leno but ended up being about tons of other stupid stuff. Figured Conan's new start deserved his own new thread. Eventually he will land somewhere. So where's it gonna be? Fox? ABC? Comedy Central? The Internet? And what time will his show be on? I can't really see any network putting him on at 11:35 without a major program rearrangement. Lots of stuff to figure out. Discuss here.

i don't think ABC wants him

and cable would be a big step down from a network, even NBC

probably FOX

yeah, i think FOX is likely o brien's next move

but also a spot on comedy central would be cool, with some cross shows with stewart and colbert.

I agree Fox is looking like the most likely place for Conan to end up, but now the question is what time? Fox's local news ends at 10:30. But starting his show then would mean it would compete with the 2nd half of every 10:00 show on all the other networks, so at the very least a half hour filler show would be needed. Pushing it back to 11:00 means it would compete with the local network news, which wouldn't be the end of the world, but it still wouldn't be the normal 11:35 slot, which may or may not be important to Conan. I also wonder if an old rerun of Seinfeld will be a big enough lead in for Conan if they did go that route. I know a lot of people would watch Conan no matter where he went and what time his show was on, but networks have to think of the big picture with things like this. It's never going to be as simple as "he's going to Fox".

maybe i've become too new-school or i really don't care, but it seems like networks put A LOT of stock in 11pm local news

can anyone explain? everything i've read make 11pm local news sound like the the-must-watch event of the night

it is, for people who still don't get their news from the internet

conan's core audience however, doesn't give a shit about the 11pm news.

^^Yeah, I don't get it either. I also don't understand how with DVR and this newfangled device called a remote that allows people to change the channel whenever they want without having to waddle over to the TV that the lead-in shows matter as much as they used to. Is it really that much of a stretch to think that people can watch one show on NBC at 9:00 and then change the channel to Fox at 10:00?

^Well, like I said, Conan's core audience is going to watch him no matter what. They're trying to get the masses to watch, which I guess means every little thing counts. Like lead-ins and competing against the local news.

here's the story: affiliates make their big money from local news because they only have to run local commercials. if their lead-in to the local news is bad, they make much less money. after too long of this, they could potentially not carry whatever the bad national show is and do early local news, or ditch that network altogether for a different network.

i don't know how it is in raleigh, but it lasts from 10-11 in greensboro, followed by an hour of seinfeld re-runs starting at 11

there's only so long a typos in newspapers retain any kind of amusement

Is it really that much of a stretch to think that people can watch one show on NBC at 9:00 and then change the channel to Fox at 10:00?"

The entire ratings system is, to some extent, still stuck in the 50s. Up until a couple of years ago, you would be denied of being a Nielsen household if you had a DVR or HDTV (thats when they Nielsens were fully stuck in the 50s). In regards to the quote above, the thinking is that most people arent thinking "Im going to watch Chuck at 8 and then flip to 24 at 9". They think that most people have no idea what a tv schedule is, and if a show is somewhat interesting, people will just roll with it and not bother to change a channel. The goal is for you to not change the channel...ever. The importance of a late night show like The Tonight Show, for example, is not about getting ratings at midnight, but mostly to keep you on NBC when you go to bed, so that when you wake up in the morning, your TV is already tuned to The Today Show.

I was familiar with most of that ^, but I wonder how stuff like Hulu factors in (if at all)? I watch Conan on a fairly regular basis off of Hulu but hardly ever live on TV. I have a feeling more of Conan's audience DVRs his show and watches him on Hulu etc. than Leno's does.

That's interesting. It all makes sense in a way, but in today's world it's spectacularly retarded. Especially when you consider that every Time Warner Box defaults to their local news channel every time you turn it on.

The biggest flaw of every single person on this board, along with virtually every single person I've spoken with about this, is that they have absolutely no clue about how retarded the average network television viewer is.

conan on prime-time would not work. one of the reasons jay's show did so bad (apart from him being god-awful) was the fact that other networks wouldn't let their stars appear on a show that aired during prime-time because it would take away from that networks viewing lineup. that little fact alone, to me, is the most damning piece of evidence that nbc clearly failed to project the inevitable failure of the jay leno show (or maybe it was their long term goal of having him re-gain the tonight show).

what if conan tried going for syndication? Then stations in local markets can pick him up individually and figure out what to do with their local news programs without letting a network be involved.

meh, I definitely agree Ferrell is way played out but he didn't detract much there; the cowbell was ok too. It was just fun to see Conan rocking out and enjoying himself. That was awesome in itself.

^ it would have been awesome to have everybody out there rocking out. but will has to be the center of attention on Conan's last show. so he brings back a skit from awhile back to try and get laughs, and then gets right up into the camera, or makes out with preggers. he is a faggot and i hate him.
