I assume you are posting from another computer on your home network? Can you ping http://www.google.com?

when i called TWC, they had me ping sites and i got 0% loss. he said that since it was 0% loss it was a comp problem and told me to call my computer manufacture. it's a custom built desktop so i've just been troubleshooting myself. and yeah i am on my laptop on the same network and it is working perfectly fine...I can ping all sites you guys listed.[Edited on January 17, 2010 at 4:35 PM. Do you have a proxy setup in IE or Firefox?
1/17/2010 4:39:18 PM
GameOver4U
1/17/2010 4:40:28 PM
not really sure what that means...sorry...i'm only a little bit comp tech savvy...
1/17/2010 4:40:41 PM
In Firefox, click tools -> options -> advanced -> network -> settings
1/17/2010 5:01:25 PM
the box is checked that says "auto-detect proxy settings for this network"
1/17/2010 5:03:01 PM
I'd try selecting "no proxy" and see if that resolves it.
1/17/2010 5:04:37 PM
no go
1/17/2010 5:09:38 PM
I am assuming you've tried rebooting at some point, right? Also, is the "working" computer connected via wireless or a wire?
1/17/2010 5:11:32 PM
yeah i've rebooted a bunch. all of the comps in our house are connected via wireless. my desktop is the only one not working.
1/17/2010 5:13:32 PM
Beats me then. Sorry.
1/17/2010 5:16:20 PM
before this all started this morning, i went in to the process tab and ended some processes. after i did that is when i started having the problems. is it possible to restore processes that i ended that may be casuing this problem?

you never answered if http://72.14.204.104 worked.http://www.malwarebytes.org install/update/scan

sry i thought i did. do you mean can i ping it and get a response? if so then i think yes but if i type it into my web browser then no it doesnt work. i ran malwarebytes and nothing found.

Try downloading Google Chrome on one of the machines that is working, use a USB stick to move it to the nonworking machine, install, and see what happens.Possible issue with malware right now, given AIM works.
1/17/2010 6:43:57 PM
and google.com doesnt work either
1/17/2010 6:44:14 PM
trying google chrome now...ok so i got google chrome installed and opened it and the homepage worked. i went to google.com and the page loaded for 1 second and as soon as it came up a blue screen came up where the webpage should be and it says "Aw, Snap! something went wrong while displaying this webpage. to continue, press reload or go to another page."does this mean i have some sort of malware problem?[Edited on January 17, 2010 at 6:56 PM. yup. looks like you've been to the wrong porn sites.
1/17/2010 6:56:02 PM
whenever i download that combofix to my laptop and copy it to a flash drive, it won't open up on my desktop. it says the file combofix.exe cannot be opened and then deletes the file from the drive.

did you try in safemode? Malwarebytes might help also
1/17/2010 9:29:04 PM
rename it to a random string of characters and then boot the computer into safe mode with command prompt.
1/17/2010 9:30:54 PM
this is a custom built computer and for some reason i've never been able to boot it into safe mode. i press f8 all day long but it never goes into the screen where i can choose safe mode.i've tried malware bytes and everytime i use it it detects the same malware and says it removes it and i have to restart to compeltely get rid of it. as soon as i reboot and run malware bytes again, it detects the same exact malware.[Edited on January 17, 2010 at 9:39 PM. 1/17/2010 9:42:10 PM

1/17/2010 9:43:01 PM
I am washing my hands of this thread.
1/17/2010 9:45:14 PM

1/17/2010 9:46:01 PM
i have a 2nd harddrive on htis comp that i use to store recorded tv but i dont actually use it anymore. is it possible to make that drive my c: drive and just transfer what i want to the new drive? kind of start over but take files that i want to keep, like music, pictures, etc.?
1/17/2010 9:48:33 PM

any ideas steve dude?
1/18/2010 6:00:43 PM
You've got more viruses than Paris Hilton
1/18/2010 6:13:45 PM
1/18/2010 11:37:59 PM
i would try these in no particular order1. winsock to fix your corrupted ip settings2. run malwarebytes in safe mode, be sure the process loading the virus is stopped and not autostarted in startup, use msconfig to turn off permanently3. system restore to an earlier backupi've experienced your issue several times before and never once had i had to do a system format/windows reload....that should always be your LAST resort

this didn't make sense to me, but I bought two wireless usb dongles for my desktop. one connected to my wifi network and could ping and send intranet data and the other could actually do shit on the internet. did you recently get a new wifi card?
1/19/2010 1:35:16 AM
