the piece that mates the stove to the pipe (it actually fits inside of the stove and leads out) is called what?

That just might be it. The piece I need doesn't actually have the butterfly shutoff in it though. It's still called called the flue collar huhthanks!

ok i found this \listed under "starter collar". it is not made of the metal i need. If home depot doesn't have it, where could i find something like that

That's galvanized...what do you want?

If that isn't what you want try going to a stove and fireplace store.

that gavanized stuff is not made for woodstoves. its made for like dryer vents and such. duct work. its a much thinner metal to boot. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5/R-100396967/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

i've got a fireplace with no flue in it. i guess that's what its called, if i look up i can see all the way through to the sky. (there is a chimney cap, but you get the idea) if i want to put gas logs in there, what is the best way to keep the heat from going straight up the chimney?

First, get a flue.To keep the heat inside, there's an accessory that you can get with gas logs, it's a electric blower with this wide, thin metal duct that goes right over the flames and blows hot air into the room. Works pretty well.

yeah, otherwise all the heat you're paying for is going out the chimblyp.s: here is the ugliest webpage i've seen in ten yearshttp://www.hearthstove.info/[Edited on January 10, 2010 at 8:28 PM. Reason : asdf]
