A designer clock, provided by donors, was taken from D.H. Hill Library on November 15, 10:38pm. Staff on duty were busy assisting students when this event occurred.

It's true - at least it's all I've ever heard it called by library folks. In the rush to open the East Wing after its renovation, making sure all the decor was secured was overlooked in some cases. I'll see if tattletaping that and other items is possible (I imagine it would be).

Another approach we're looking at is using RFID to help secure high-value items; currently laptops.

You'd be surprised - the last time someone tried to steal some neurology journals the staff member sitting there was so upset, he/she leaped clear over the desk and lunged at the guy carrying them out. He dropped the bag that he had them in and ran. Ended up saving ~$25k+ in assets.

Many on the regular/permanent staff that run services at the circulation desks are quite passionate about what they do.

It was very likely that the level of foot traffic during that time was what helped him escape notice from staff. 10pm is a time when a lot of folks are entering D.H. Hill for the evening; it's a lot busier than in the morning hours. It's amazing just what one can miss when occupied with other tasks:

Agreed, and I think Campus Police would be interested in doing so - we'd welcome an ID to forward along. Although the Libraries only cares about having the clock returned, not really anything on the disciplinary side of things.

So far at least, I don't believe any action to charge the individual has taken place - the choice would be up to Campus Police. The Libraries does not want to pursue further action. Generally we love it when people take our stuff... so long as they bring it back and let us know first, lol.
