The whole Weis thing got me thinking Its not the job any coach would want to have, its the job that receives the most National attention, the most criticism when you lose, and the most praise when you winSo while most coaches would rather be at Florida and Texas than in South Bend, the Notre Dame job is still more important, in my opinion1. Notre Dame Football2. New York Yankees3. Dallas Cowboys4. UNC Basketball5. Alabama Football6. Los Angeles Lakers7. Kentucky Basketball8. USC Football9. Boston Celtics10. UCLA BasketballWho else you got ?- The NFL is self-cannibalizing here...even though its the country's most popular sport, each job is so important and deals with so much media pressure that they kind of hold equal weight except for Dallas - I don't pay too much attention to hockey, but I can't seen any one of those jobs cracking this list- For you soccer fans, I know some of the coaches for European teams could be on this list, but I left those alone because I really have no idea- I feel like UCLA should be higher, but lots of people probably don't know who the fuck Ben Howland is, while everyone knows Roy and Cal- No, Jaybee1200, its not...and not even really that close.

Tough list to make. I think you need another baseball team though besides the Yanks, like the Sox. I think the Steelers belong up there also.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens have got to be on the list. Those two teams have an entire nation hanging on their every move. The Leafs have a television channel dedicated to them. You have hundreds of media personnel following you and the team around everywhere you go. A lot of guys can't handle it. I'd say those are bigger than a lot of the teams on your list because in the US there is such a diversity of sports that it's difficult to have a situation like in Canada where nearly all of the focus is on hockey. The same goes for European soccer. Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, etc. The pressure is on those clubs to win titles every single year without fail, and they are followed religiously around the world.
12/1/2009 11:52:11 AM
We should keep this topic to American sports teams IMOIt is hard to quantify international teams as most of us don't follow them at all or very closely. I don't doubt the Maple Leafs are important in Canada, but I couldn't name one player on the team or anything about them.
12/1/2009 11:56:14 AM
You have notre dame way too high. They can only bring in smart guys.
12/1/2009 11:57:43 AM
Why would the cowboys coaching job be more prestigious than the steelers or pats??
12/1/2009 11:58:00 AM
^^^Exactly, which I why I gave the caveats about soccer and hockeyEveryone here knows football, basketball and baseball, so they're the only ones we can rank with any accuracy You coming in here jacking off to Sir Alex Ferguson isn't going to change that^ The Pats have only been relevant in the past decade...the Steelers are like the Packers in that they're very popular and very successful, but the their small hometown market precludes them from ever being at the top of the ladder[Edited on December 1, 2009 at 12:00 PM. Reason : x]
12/1/2009 11:58:28 AM
steelers aren't on the list because they only change coaches once every other decade
12/1/2009 12:01:16 PM
If the scope is football, basketball, and baseball, I think it goes:1. New York Yankees2. Dallas Cowboys3. Alabama football4. LA Lakers5. Boston Red Sox6. Notre Dame football7. Pittsburgh Steelers8. Chicago Cubs9. UNC basketball10. Washington Redskins
12/1/2009 12:01:24 PM
Are we talking about pressure or prestige ??I dont think they are really related ... yankees coaching job would be highest pressure because they spend more than anyone to make their team the best ... I dont really see it as prestigious. Same with NotreDame football ... I think they have pressure because Catholics care about *their team*, and theres lots of them ... And I think your logic is backwards ... the teams that receive the most praise when they win are the teams that dominate when NOT expected to ... I dont see the yankees as any more prestigious than cubs/redsox ... but definitely more pressure than any job out there in all of sports ... dallas cowboys being a close second in terms of pressure.
12/1/2009 12:03:21 PM
yeah, the cubs and red sox who had almost 100 years without a championship are as prestigious as the yankees. the yankees are easily the most prestigious, you can probably name 4-5 yankee managers off the top of your head, and unless you really follow another team probably can't do that. i hate them, and i sure as hell wouldn't (like if i actually had other offers) take the job, but the yankees are #1 in baseball fo sho
12/1/2009 12:17:00 PM
If notre dame was the most prestigious coaching job in all of sports, then they wouldn't even need a coaching search. Much like Roy Williams doesn't have to recruit. He just chooses the best high school players that fill a need on the roster. You think at this point in his career he has to exert himself much when it comes to recruiting?
12/1/2009 12:24:47 PM
^^^ Prestige creates pressureI have no idea how you can say you don't consider the Yankee job as prestigious. It might be the definition of what we are talking about. They are the most dominant team in the history of American sports.I don't agree with that statement about the underdog doing well to generate praise. That doesn't matter at all. If the Cowboys were supposed to do well and were living up to that hype, it doesn't matter if KC is 10-1, the Cowboys would get more love.
12/1/2009 12:33:16 PM
1. Michigan Wolverines
12/1/2009 12:42:21 PM
I think most americans (and non yankees fans) understand the reason for yankee success ... they just throw a pile of money out there, and bring in the best players... Its not prestigious if its "rigged" or if its simply a walk in the park. Prestige is created from a culture and a tradition. I find it hard to throw the word prestige at ANY major league clubs these days, in any sports, since its not tradition and prestige that bring good players to those teams, but rather simply money...Maybe I am playing with words, or argueing semantics, but yankees past is not the same as yankees present. I just dont buy into the hype. If I buy a $100k dog, and my neighbor buys a $100 dog, and I did so just for the purpose of winning all dog races, and he did not want to spend as much ... well... I would expect to win ... yes there would be expectation there. But just because I go on to win races with my neighbor for 20 strait years, it doesnt make my brand prestigious ... dominant yes ... not prestigious.
12/1/2009 12:50:08 PM
So now the truth surfaces. You're a hater so you don't want to give credit where credit is due. Free agency is a fairly modern invention so does that mean that the Yankees first 18 titles mean nothing?FTR I am an Indians fan and not a Yankee fan, but trying to make the argument that the Yankees aren't in their own category is just flat out dumb.
12/1/2009 12:57:29 PM
the yankees also have probably the largest fan base of anybody, ever. even if they're not really yankee fans, people all over the world wear the NY hat. Yes, I hate the Yankees too, and I'll steal this from Jim Rome, cheering for them is like cheering for the Casino to make money in Vegas, but they still get the most exposure, have some of the best players that have every played the game (past and present, even if they bought them), and are the most prestigious

12/2/2009 11:10:10 PM
and there isnt much coaching in baseball... so its not a huge/prestigious deal
12/2/2009 11:11:23 PM
^^ I like college football and all but that's just ridiculous. A team like the Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, NY Yankees and Steelers have about 100x the following of those schools. They get way more criticism, praise, articles written about them, ESPN time, etc and it really doesn't compare. Outside of the South the importance of college football falls way off. The US as a whole cares a whole lot more about professional sports.I thought you were supposed to be objective, right? Also, dollar value and prestige have some sort of correlation. You don't become the richest for no reason.[Edited on December 3, 2009 at 2:04 AM. Reason : x]

I think Notre Dame's coaching job is very prestigious, but it is a job I don't think many would want to have. They are expected to compete with all the great schools, but they are kind of at a disadvantage when it comes to recruiting (IMO). Most of the really big name schools are located in warmer climates that tend to attract college atheletes (I understand this is a very broad generalization and definitely not true in some cases.) I guess what I am saying is it is much more likely for a great athelete to leave Indiana to go to California or Florida than it is for someone to leave a "nice" state to go play in Indiana. Add in to that, it is a Catholic school, and many protestant or even agnostics/aethiests may be turned off by that. I think coaches have a tougher time attracting recruits, and it is much tougher for them to win. Notre Dame was a big deal when we were kids (OK when I was a kid) but all most high school seniors see is a team that has had a bunch of different coaches, a huge bowl losing streak (until Hawaii), and perinneal disappointing seasons.
12/3/2009 4:42:45 AM
ND's recruiting class rankings since Weis arrived:2005 - #10 (according to scout.com, the other classes are according to espn)2006 - #52007 - #82008 - #92009 - #14Clearly they're having problems recruiting
