I always buy my stuff at Nahunta (Farmer's Market) but they're closed today. Just got roped into smoking some swine for thanksgiving and want to get it in the brine by tonight. Any suggestions where to buy a shoulder (10 lbs or so)?

from a pork that no longer needs his shoulder

Costco man.... always Costco.
11/23/2009 12:43:56 PM
Yeah - I played with doing that, but I don't want to pony up the $50 membership just to buy some swine. I'm going to swing down to the Farmer's Market during lunch and see if there's any other vendors.

MAE Farms is another vendor at the Farmer's Market http://maefarmmeats.com/

do you not shop at traditional groceries???they sell pork shoulders at any store
11/23/2009 12:59:57 PM
I didn't see any at Harris Teeter this morning, but I was hauling ass and barely awake. The Nahunta thing is just a habit, but yeah, I do like buying stuff over there vs. Lowes or something. No big deal.
11/23/2009 1:04:40 PM
ok i was just confused for a sec

I usually buy pork shoulders from Harris Teeter. They can run out, of course, but any grocery store with a butcher/decent meat section should have it.
11/23/2009 1:08:43 PM
I'd check the Teeter up at Cameron Village if you're in the area--if they don't have one The Fresh Market very well might, and it's just on the other side of CV.

BJ's always has a lot of shoulders and they are decent priced
11/23/2009 1:35:26 PM
BJ's, costco, Sam's. I've gotten my Boston Butts at Sam's for the past few years.

I'm from Nahunta where they actual store is at. My family buys all their pork from there. Really recommend it to everyone. check it out at the farmers market

Harris Teeter and Food Lion have the occasional 10+ lbsers. Sam's ftw if you're a member and Whole Foods if you want Food Lion meat with fancy packaging for twice the price. I'm actually smoking a butt either wed. or fri. I built a pot smoker a month or so ago. Similar to this but with two 18 in pots:http://www.naffziger.net/blog/2008/07/05/the-alton-brown-flower-pot-smoker/

Why was nahunta closed? The five gallon buckets of lard trip me out every time I go to buy a pig.
11/24/2009 7:45:43 AM
maybe it's closed on mondays?
11/24/2009 7:49:36 AM
Yeah they're closed on Mondays.
11/24/2009 11:33:45 AM
yeah, so i made one of those pot smokers too... pain in the ass, and the meat wasn't worth the hassle i went through. I'd much rather tend charcoal.

i'm thinking about making my own bacon from pork bellyim gonna call tomorrow but does anyone know how much per pound in the neighborhood i might be looking at?
12/14/2009 9:25:29 PM
is that the same thing as fresh side meat?if so, i think you can find it on sale for like $1.99 /lb iirc

You gotta find the black market butchers. Selling meat out of the trunk of a car is the only way to get top quality meat for little money.
12/16/2009 4:28:13 PM
its easier to get a whole pig than just the part i want
