i wish they'd stop playing that "monster" song on this nc state/clemson broadcast
11/14/2009 1:51:24 PM
People have to grow up sometime.I like the double standard you have though… blacks aren’t allowed to say their condition is related to slavery and jim crow, but the whites are allowed to harken back to those slave days whenever they want. And i’m sure you’ve heard the story of the school in mississippi that had their firs integrated prom just last year: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91371629They are a backwards people in mississippi and anything that pulls them into the 20th century even is good for them.
11/14/2009 2:03:38 PM
come on. blacks complaining about slavery is a million times different than having some kind of regional pride, and you know it.
11/14/2009 3:33:01 PM
Considering this is the same region where people have been lynched for trying to help black folks, I'd say they're a lot more related than you'd give credit.
11/14/2009 5:53:13 PM
If you're from the south and white you should remained ashamed for shit that happend almost 150 years ago. Didn't you get the memo from ACORN and the DNC?
11/14/2009 5:56:23 PM
^^ Yeah, there have never been any race-related incidents in New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and so on. STFU.
11/14/2009 6:29:35 PM
I'm here to agree with hooksaw.the south definitely doesn't and didn't have the market cornered on racism. at all.this is an old argument, though. all it takes is reading a few American history books, particularly ones about immigration and socialization.
11/14/2009 7:03:00 PM
^^ Ya, I get that. But if you want to leave the past in the past, then you can't decide to pick and choose the parts you like and don't like. You gotta leave shit like this behind, too.

"The South Shall Rise Again"OH GOD!WHY???
11/14/2009 8:27:21 PM
I guess I think some people need to stop being so fucking sensitive. Regional pride >> some sissy's feelings
11/14/2009 8:29:55 PM
Yeah right, they're celebrating the South as it was AT THAT TIME PERIOD for a reason. Why not celebrate and be proud of the South as it was around the time of the fucking industrial revolution or some shit?I'M NOT GOING TO CELEBRATE THE SOUTH UNLESS I'M CELEBRATING THE SOUTH AS IT WAS WHEN THEY WERE FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHT TO OWN AND HANG NEGROES!!!!LOL"The South Shall Rise Again"OH NOES!!!

11/15/2009 10:45:24 AM
you people need to read the fucking article.everyone, aside from a contingent of mob-rule rednecks, is behind the initiative to stop students from shouting a secessionist and historically racist chant at football games.
11/15/2009 12:56:09 PM
Slight clarification:The song in question isn't "Dixie," it's "From Dixie with Love" which is based on "An American Trilogy" (mainly known as Elvis' version). The line where people yell "the south shall rise again" is to the melody of "Battle Hymn of the Republic."And ^ is right, a lot of people down here have been suggesting for months that the students just change it to something like "Ole Miss shall rise again."
11/15/2009 1:01:38 PM
you people also need to listen to the Fifth Stanza from our UNITED STATES NATIONAL ANTHEM.

This is rediculous. I think al sharpton, liberal democrats, and certain minorities groups incorrectly autocorrelate southern pride into a convoluted pro-slavery racist mindset.
11/15/2009 2:46:18 PM
This would not so often be the case if those who tend to so vociferously demonstrate southern pride were not also the ones who so often display an overtly racist mindset through other means.
11/15/2009 3:15:10 PM
I know plenty of people up here in the DC metro area who express their southern pride without resorting to chanting "The South Shall Rise Again" and waving a confederate flag. Some southerners just love the idea of how the South was back in 1850, and love to show it!
11/15/2009 4:20:33 PM
I'll tell you what betrays these asshole's racism is the fact that as much as they like to pretend that the stars and bars are about "cultural heritage," its obvious that they don't know jack shit about it because then they would know that 1) the stars and bars is NOT the confederate flag (as they claim)2) the stars and bars was popularized early in the 20th century by white supremacist groups because it was the confederate battle flagSo... yea. Those two little factoids usually results in two reactions1) Shamed silence2) Full on redneck rampage as their racism is laid bare for all to see
11/15/2009 4:24:16 PM
^This is the "Stars and Bars."Know what you are talking about before you go spouting shit off.Not only that, but it (and it's other variations with more stars) was the official confederate flag only until 1863, after which a white flag with the "southern cross" emblem on it was adopted. ^^ whatever - you know EXACTLY to which flag I was referring... In fact, I explictly said that it was the battle flag.Look - I'm not the one claiming to know and celebrate the "cultural heritage" of a bunch of racist rednecks. My point stands.[Edited on November 15, 2009 at 5:19 PM. Reason : s]
11/15/2009 5:14:16 PM
no, you tried to talk down to a group of people and came off like a complete moron in the process. your entire "argument" was based on wrong assumptions and was blatantly incorrect. you fail.

they don't pick that flag for racist intentions, though. What THEY know of the flag is what it represents TO THEM.The Nazis picked the swastika. I guess that makes all Indian people nazis, right?
11/15/2009 5:20:25 PM
Why did they pick the flag? The popularity of the battle flag is directly traceable to its popularization by white supremacist groups in the early 20th century. Therefore, it IS a racist symbol in our modern context with racist origins and furthermore, they clearly are NOT celebrating a race-neutral cultural history. If they truly had any interest in their cultural history, they would realize the racist origins of the popularization of hte battle flag and they would fly the true confederate flag instead

^ congrats on, again, making a 100% unfounded statement.^^ ok, then how can YOU tell me why they display it, as well? Two can play that game.^^^ Some people undoubtedly display it to be racists. The vast majority today probably don't know the "history."

Why not just show your "southern pride" by being polite to folks while making biscuits and sweet tea instead of shouting a chant of secession?

11/15/2009 6:29:16 PM
strangely enough, i haven't seen either of those two flags on chevy pickups or harley davidsons around here.
