ran chkdsk... found errors:

did an OS repair... it's running ok right now. typically, I can hear the HDD clicking/running all of the time... lately I've had a lot of stalls/freezes with Office 2k7, Firefox, and windows explorer

continue until it fucks up again? reformat & reinstall OS? need new HDD?

i would look for a cheap HD just in case.... but yeah backup what you want, you've got a ticking time bomb right now....

i would try for the reformat or just until it dies, that will tell you pretty well if you need a new hd or not... (probably will though)

hmm... I need to check the warranty on this notebook... may be able to get a free HDD. however, there is some case damage from an unfortunate event a while back ago... hopefully I won't have to send it in for a HDD swap.

I've got everything backed up. In fact, I really don't store much on the internal HDD anyways. I'm just ready and waiting

dammit. dell is fucking retarded sometimes. won't let me chat iwth TS because thinks my warranty is expired... on the same page is says that it's good for another 161 days.

diag tests didn't show any problems probably means no HDD from warranty

^yeh, I've had that happen before. But Dell won't give me a new HDD unless the tests show problems or it finally dies

damn TS is annoying. they ask me what issues I'm having and before I can even get 1/4 way through they start interrupting and asking shit that I've already answered.

why did you run chkdsk w/out using the recovery parameter? you already knew you had errors.

chkdsk /R and run it before booting into windows.

backup, then format & install if needed

^^^1.5 years
^^I did the first 2 times. and immediately after it BSOD'd. The screenshot is from the 3rd time when I didn't /R
^thought about it, but they've made me ship my whole system in for a HDD swap and I figured they'd find out then

There's a portion of the Dell HW test, IIRC, where it measures throughput. Your drive, even though it doesn't report as failing, should show unusually low/slow numbers for throughput, that could justify a RMA.

im assuming you originally had a 1 year warrantly and you also have an nvidia gpu. thats why they extended your warranty for an extra year. But that extra 1 year warranty only applies to the gpu just in case it fails. I had a 1530 earlier this year till whenever I watched a movie for 15 mins and up, it would consistenly freeze from 5 mins - 10 mins. I had my motherboard changed 5 times due to me bitching at them, and finally they sent me a another laptop which hasn't had a problem since.

^I have a full 2-yr warranty, not an extended on the gpu. movie as in dvd?

^^is that in the PSa?

oh, hmm well nm then but you should get your gpu checked out. If it is a 9400m or 9600m gt then most likely they're defective.

great. fucking error on reinstall. appears to be a disc issue. getting a new disc mailed tomorrow.

And since I believe the original issue is HW based and not SW based (as dell thinks), I started running some of the advanced diagnostics... whaddya know... hard drive failure! on the phone now trying to convince them to shell out a new HDD

damn morons make me run the same tests over and over again, even though I told them I've already run them

during those times where i had to chat with dell support regarding my defective gpu, those fools would not listen even though nvidia publicly stated their gpu was defective. Also while you're at it, check your memory. Sometimes bad sticks will stop an installation.
