The Libraries finally released a bunch of images of the new Hunt Library for Centennial Campus. They've got some rather lofty goals for the building, what are your guys thoughts?I can recall, while a student, going to Centennial Campus one time in five years of college. (And it was on account of a group project of whom three group members were Textile Students)So for the rest of us who weren't / aren't in Engineering or Textiles... Would you ever go over to Centennial just to use the study areas in the cool new library?http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/huntlibrary/

i'd bet that engineering and textiles combined account for more money coming into the university than all of the other areas combined - perhaps by the time it's done though you won't have to go to the library because books will be electronically available

i think i spotted carmen sandiegoalsoin the long-term, the idea that centennial is some sort of "satellite campus" will be long dead as it continues to growthere will be residence halls, a dining hall, the chancellor's residence, and way more classrooms and partners buildingsit wouldn't surprise me if they build another gym over therw in the next 50 yearshere's an old chestnut of a rendering from years ago... i might run into a more updated one at some point[Edited on October 20, 2009 at 10:32 AM. Funny that you mention the idea of books as digital media... This library is supposed to use a pretty high tech print storage system. (http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/huntlibrary/ars.html)It's a pretty big part of their mission statement that this building be forward-looking, and flexible with future technologies.

For my part, having done my undergrad at State, and being in grad school there now too, I think I've only been to Centennial twice... both times only to see what it was like.

Many may go there, for one thing, because parking will probably be better.

I'm guessing here but I'll bet that the ex-gov is "So very proud"

It looks nice, dunno if I'd have used it over DH Hill when I was a student. But then, I was in the Psych department, we had our own lil bitty library to use. Do they have any future plans to redo DH Hill, or are they just going to leave it as-is for a while.
10/20/2009 1:57:17 PM
ugly
10/20/2009 2:56:10 PM
Less likely to contain bums that cum on your shoes?
10/20/2009 2:57:24 PM
ugly and will look like talley....dated
10/20/2009 3:27:27 PM
It does look ugly. What must be noted is the lack of any mother fucking bricks. The 4th pic looks beautiful, though.
10/20/2009 4:28:38 PM
Who designed this thing? You would think that you'd what it to harmonize with the other buildings already constructed or planned.

re timswar Hill has been seeing improvements for the past few years. After the Learning Commons opened in spring 2007 other areas of the library have been improved. The Digital Media Lab's in a new space in the Learning Commons and device lending (flips, kindles, laptops) has moved to streamline service. The Special Collections Research Center has an exhibit about Hunt you can learn more about here:http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/exhibits/hunt/index.htmlre Design: Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee, a North Carolina firm based out of Raleigh and Asheville, as executive architect and Snøhetta, an internationally recognized firm with offices in Oslo, Norway, and New York City, as lead designer[Edited on October 20, 2009 at 4:50 PM. Looks like someone mixed a dollop of Essence of Frank Lloyd Wright and a pinch or two of Guggenheim into the old magic AutoCAD and spewed forth this thing.

Hell, even Leazar until they added that retarded elevator shaft to it w/ completely the wrong color bricks...[Edited on October 20, 2009 at 6:27 PM. Reason : fixed images and bad grammar]
10/20/2009 6:26:05 PM
I had a feeling columns might be involved.
10/20/2009 6:30:41 PM
Holladay doesn't have columns Here, how about Syme, no columns.Really, this is the shot that does it in for me. It just looks too much like some architect's take on the future...from 1975.I bet they thought this building looked like hot shit when they designed it too...[Edited on October 20, 2009 at 6:39 PM. That porch on the front of Holladay is a carriage reception area.Bet they thought that thing was cutting edge in 1890.It's been so long since it was outdated that now it feels classical.btw for this thread:• photo_folder.aspx?user=1212&folder=OldSchoolNCState&filter=• photo_folder.aspx?user=1212&folder=OldSchoolNCState2&filter=• photo_folder.aspx?user=1212&folder=NewSchoolN.C.State&filter=• http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/universityarchives/historicalstate/index.html

There is one crucial thing missing from these renderings, that we all know will be heavily utilized/included. Red Bricks. Overall I don't like the renderings; they're trying too hard to be all fancy. There is enough architecture around campus (Main and Centennial) to be consistent, but make the building unique. And what Marko said is right. With so much Engineering moving over there, Textiles already over there, and more planned development on the campus, it will need a library.
10/21/2009 12:50:24 AM

No bricks? But how will students develop the necessary 3 year post-graduation hatred of bricks that us Alumni know so well?
10/21/2009 8:30:32 AM
that is the ugliest fucking building i have ever seenplease please please tell me that isn't getting built

Wow a lot of negativity? As a civil engineer it is a very innovative and unique design. Centennial is the future of NCSU and I am liking this modern/industrial concept. This is going to be a big structure, and I have a feeling many people who dislike it now will be impressed by it.

Charles M. Amato Library on Centennial Campus
10/23/2009 11:50:05 AM
This new library will not just feature Textiles/Engineering materials. There has been a lot of talk, among staff, that they are thinking of housing some depts of CHASS over there at the new Hunt Library. I'm not sure exactly which depts or anything like that, but it is not just going to be a library for Textiles/Engineering students/faculty only.
10/23/2009 2:43:30 PM
anything they can do to get some women closer to the EBs, i'm for
10/23/2009 2:52:44 PM

I bet people will prefer it if it has better accessibility for parking.

i would definitely have used this over DH Hill back when I lived off Trailwood

I have a funny story bout the new library. Last year a friend and I were out of cash and we both had no meal plans, so we started going to a ton of events/interest meetings for free food. One of the ones we went to was the Snohetta unveiling of there new plan for the library in DH Hill. So my friend and I were like "dude free pizza!" When we get there we realize we are 2 freshmen in a room full of faculty. This was made us feel a bit out of place but dammit we wanted pizza! We sat through the meeting, saw the plans, and everyone there either loved it or had a random, simple question. But this one prof was all pissed off at the design and how it WASN'T going FAR enough in saving energy and demonstrating to the world State's awesome Captain Planet powers. He started telling the Snohetta rep they needed to install wind turbines on the roof to help power it. The poor rep lady was dumbfounded and tried to appease him, but he went on for like 20 min. All the other faculty just kinda stared at him and no one else asked any more questions. It was good pizza though.
10/27/2009 9:20:39 PM
Do you recall this professor's name? Or what he looked like?
10/27/2009 9:53:09 PM
70s architecture should have died in the 70s. Dear god it should have.
