Hayes-Barton would be an excellent choice. It lies (roughly) in between Glenwood and St. Mary's street, just north of Wade Avenue. There is also the Carolina Country Club area, north of Glenwood and west of Lassiter Mill.

There are also really nice houses in Oakwood, which occurs west of Person street, near the Governor's mansion, and even in Cameron Park between Cameron Village and Hillsborough. But those might not be "rich" by your definition. Oakwood might though, and it's full of victorians.

From Five Points, drive down fairview and turn left onto St. Mary's St.

Drive around (or better, walk) that neighborhood... Will blow your mind. It is better to walk, because then you will have time to actually see the immense and immaculately landscaped yards/compounds that some of those houses sit on.... Keep in mind that this is inside the beltline in the most desired area of the city. Those lots are worth $TEXAS.

The Hayes-Barton area has some crazy stuff. I used to rent a house over on Fairview when I was a student. I'd go for a walk/run/bike in the area. They have some of the most well maintained property in Raleigh. The lots that the homes sit on alone are worth bank.

The areas around Carolina Country Club off Glenwood have probably the largest and most expensive homes in Raleigh. Go to FMrealty.com, put "inside the beltline" for the area, and put $1,000,000 for the minimum price. Most of the homes on the first page are in that area.

I'm not sure if op was looking for houses where rich people lived or rich houses. The houses in most of these areas named inside the beltline have high value because of the land, not the house. Many of these houses are nice, but not really impressive at all. If the original owners live in them, they may not be rich at all but they sell for a lot in recent years. Also, just because a house is new doesn't mean its "new money" do you know what new money and old money even mean?

Homes in wakefield like where the hurricanes owner lives blow any house inside the beltline away.

wakefield plantation and some of the neighboring areas around falls lake.

The MOST expensive homes are tucked in 30 acre, gated fences, inside the beltway, but those are not really neighborhoods... they are amazing though.

The Parade of Homes is going down this weekend. They're not the biggest or the best (and they're definitely going to be more modest this year), but you get to walk around in them and check out the latest in design.

That is certainly impressive for the "new money" vibe. I still think the best examples of "really rich" areas are the best of the ITB neighborhoods--i.e. Hayes-Barton and Carolina Country Club. The houses may not be quite as impressive (unless you have an appreciation of old-school, interesting architecture) but those two areas are old money personified.

This is a beautiful home. Owner is the gentleman developing the Soleil Center at Crabtree. Beautiful home...has over 40+ flat screens, squash court, basketball court, pool and greco, etc...this is comparable to the Playboy Mansion...took 2 hours to tour the whole house.
