What would it cost for a decent reliable one to go from here to there? (Thinking about one as an addition to whatever muscle i buy)

you'll have to dig through some modification conversations, but the brunt of "what not to get" will be available

why so vauge?

2wd?
4wd?
2 door?
4 door?
engine..4cyl? 6 cyl?
manual? auto?
removable top?
how new?

however, anything with the 4.0 that has had the oil changed regularly is pretty reliable. cherokees can be had for <$2000 and be very reliable...litttle more for ZJs and WJs, and wranglers seem to command more money than they are worth.

I second that. I was looking into getting a rubicon, but jeeps only get 14 mpg. Even a shitty 4 or 6 banger gets crappy mileage. They're cute when you take the top off but they are small and expensive to fix. They are probably better for off road capabilities.

And I thought that if I am going to get something with crappy gas mileage, I figure I could get something bigger, more reliable, American-made, less expensive and do everything I want it to such as haul my monster dogs, my motorcycles and my boyfriend : I got a Z71 fully loaded 1500 Silverado

Besides I think Jeep, Dodge and Chrystler are having either issues with their vehicles and breaking prematurely.

Makes me wonder where some of y'all folks get your info.

The Jeep 4.0 is one of the most damn reliable engines around. Not to say Jeeps haven't had their fair share of problems, but any newer 97+ Jeep is going to be pretty reliable.

I agree, the 4.0 is built on a very solid design, that engine has been around forever. The problem is the jeep itself is a shit box. Chrysler cut every corner they could on the control side, drivetrain, etc. The result is a very good motor in a shit box. I dont think jeep has ever figured out how to properly cool their v-8 engines. The grand cherokee is the ultimate shit box.

My info comes from hours of fixing other peoples jeeps, and hours towing jeeps. Also, when you drive down the highway sometime, keep track of the dead cars on the side of the road, i would be willing to bet a good bit of money that jeeps and chryslers make up the majority.

^ Yep. In the end it is a sub-$20k domestic in every way which means lots of little things breaking and half of them can be ignored.

I've been seeing tons of those things in the 200k mileage range lately though. They are small, they get terrible gas mileage, but they're also a lot of fun to own. The transmissions in the TJs seem to be pretty sturdy by comparison to the one in the YJ. The I6 engine is a workhorse with plenty of HP and torque for a 3,000 lb vehicle. The D35 axle might be weak, but it's certainly up to the task of what 99% of Jeep buyers are going to do. You can find one with a D44 from the factory if you search a little and there are tons of them riding around on swapped Ford 8.8's.

If I didn't have a 3000 lb boat I would probably get another one for wheeling and cruising around town. Instead I bought a 4Runner for its towing capacity. The 4Runner is much better quality in every way, but it also retailed for upwards of $35k so it's an apples to oranges comparison.

how does getting bad MPG equate to not reliable?

the drivetrains in the mid to late 90s jeep products are generally bullet proof as long as routine maintanence is done.

expensive to fix? where did that come from? fix it yourself..pretty straightforward.

i've owned several cherokees in the past and they have been the most reliable vehicles that me or any of my friends and family owned. my 93 cherokee ran to 200k with multiple trips to uwharrie and through the mud, and I only replaced the water pump, fuel pump, and brakes once. for 6 years. change the fluids reguarly and you're good to go.

as much trouble as i've had with my jeeps i've been incredibly happy. biggest repair in the past 8 yrs was a transfer case that went bad as a result of me being an idiot. the small stuff broke here and there but i was mechanically inclined enough to replace/repair it all myself.
sold my '95 zj w/ 220k miles on it and i see the guy who bought riding around in it regularly.
just hit 120k on my wj and the currently leaking radiator is the only issue i've had so far knock on keyboard.

the trans behind the 4cyl. motors may not be that desireable, but the AW4 and the trans and Tcase behind the 6 and 8 cyl motors are reliable.

if you are basing reliability on say 1940's era mindset

way to WHAT?

yeah, the 4.0/aw4/231 combo is pretty damn good stuff for a midsize vehicle.

grand cherokee buyers be aware of the following common problems: lock actuators, transfer case seals, rear main seal, compressor, constant cooling system issues, blend doors, heater core, water pump, radiator, and a rebuilt transmission. At least thats what I fixed on mine while I had it. Although it did almost make it to 200k before I sold it. It's a great engine, but everything else is a piece of shit. Back to Toyota.

My experience with 5 years of YJ ownership was that it was extremely reliable, with the exception of the AX-5 transmission. Get an XJ, YJ, TJ, or ZJ with the 4.0 and AX-15/NV3550/gayass automatic, and that won't be a problem.

You can get an XJ Cherokee in decent shape with reasonable mileage for <$2000, and a pretty clean one for $2500 or so. $3000 for sure.

The biggest gripe I have with Jeeps in general is that, pretty much across the board, they should've been equipped with stouter drivetrain components...totally adequate for the street, but not for offroad use (and why in the hell would you buy a Jeep if you didn't plan on offroading)?
