a cousin of mine needs to move his old (un-driven but driveable) celica from GA back to NC. Tag expired in Dec 08. With towing not an option, what would you do? Is it worse to drive with an expired tag, or drive with the wrong tag (i.e. throw on a tag from another of his cars?).

If I had to pick, I would drive with an expired tag.

using a tag from another vehicle is a much worse offense, at least in nc. assuming the expired tag was registered to him last, i would probably roll with that or no tag at all. worst case you get a "fix it" ticket and have to show proof of registration by the court date. having insurance on the vehicle is the main thing you want to worry about.

i'm not sure that nc gives transport/temp tags to non dealers, i've only had the need to get them out of state. i know for sure ga doesn't, because i've tried. fl doesn't. va used to, but i don't think they do anymore. co has been the easiest state in my experience by far. a quick glance at the title and $10 later i was on my way with a 10 day tag. the issue is that most states don't want to lose out on the tax revenue from vehicles leaving the state unregistered. that includes everything from sales to your cousin's situation. so, they do what they can to force you to register and/or title the vehicle in the state it's in, even if you're just going to transfer it when you get home. however, i will be finding out tomorrow or thursday if it's possible to get one in nc. i'll report back...

I believe NC will give a 3 day tag, though I'm not positive. They do give 3 day registrations, so I imagine they'd do this w/a tag also.
Ahmet -->recipient of a "fictitious tag" ticket two days ago, and I was --><-- close to getting in a lot more trouble. The car had insurance, tag was NOT expired and on my name belonging to a different car. It was removed by the police... Proceed at your own peril. That said, if you never give them a reason to run your plate, you're probably just fine.

You can run plates all day; you don't need a reason.

Remember that all registration violations in North Carolina are a misdemeanor; therefore you can be arrested.

I got that I could've been arrested from the guy that pulled me over, but he was cool -and I'd bought this car 4 days prior, the title was with me also, just not turned in yet-. Anyway, I'm sure cops can run any plate they want, but I doubt they do so on every car they come across.

Are you an LEO, if so do you know if NC will issue a 3 day tag? I'm kind of curious on this myself.

I recieved a 10 day tag when I needed to drive my 2.5RS from Raleigh NC to NY. I went to the DMV and explained that I purchased the car from a private party in NC and needed it transported to NY. I gave them my NCDL number (Thank go I had it memorized) suprised they let me used it; title; bill of sale, proof of insurance; and 10 buck and I was well on my way. That is until I blew the motor..so then I got tags in NY after I swapped in a motor and dipped..that last part doesnt pertain to anything. But it is ok atleast it was in May of 09. No, but they do at random sometimes. I got pulled over last year by a cop who had misentered my tag number when she ran it and had it come back as stolen--I was just sitting at a stoplight and she was the next car that pulled up, then about 30 seconds later, blue lights. So you could just happen to get "lucky".

Well I kinda had a similar question so I am not going to make a new thread. Tomorrow I am buying a truck from a private guy, but I need a tag to attach to the truck so I can drive it home. Can I get this before I buy the truck or must I have the needed paperwork to do this. I tried calling the DMV but they have been busy all morning.

I've always just offered to turn the guy's license plate in for him and fax/e-mail him the receipt if he'll leave it on there for me to drive home. Never had anyone say no to that request. It saves them a trip to the DMV and gives me a current plate on the back of the car.

Definitely a gray area if anything were to happen, but I have insurance, I drive carefully, I park the car when I get home until I have my own plates, and I'm willing to explain it to the police and deal with the consequences (if any) if they stop me for some reason.

Yeah the lady said no 30 day tags can be issued for my case. But I did that ^ with my motorcycle and it worked out fine. I'll have to go to the DMV anyways so he might be compliant :-) Thanks

okay, per a visit to the dmv today i can confirm nc allows for 3 day or 10 day temp/transport tags. HOWEVER... if the vehicle is flagged in the system for expired inspection, it's a no go. it also has to be titled (or at least applied for) in your name and you must show proof of insurance.
