so my intent of this thread is to spur discussion as to what Russel what have to do on the football field this season to make him decide to skip the baseball season and focus on football. Is there any chance of this happening? I know he was hurt some this year during baseball season, but he seems to be a far far better football player.if he gets 1rst team again, does he stick to football?
9/26/2009 6:57:33 PM
i've always said if i were him i'd (eventually) stick with baseball, because of salary, average length of career, etcalthough i obviously hope he is a 4 year football starter for usbut they mentioned his numbers today...i think like 10 RBIs and a .250 average or something? didnt sound stellar, but i havent dug any deeper
9/26/2009 6:58:27 PM
I don't think people give him much chance to be a pro QB, too short. And despite his elusiveness, he doesn't have the speed to be a WR in the pros like many fast college QB's do.So he probably sticks with baseball.

2 sport pro
9/26/2009 7:07:52 PM
^^yea but he hit .237, that is pretty crappy, right??
9/26/2009 7:09:39 PM
Football this season, baseball only next year.

9/26/2009 7:23:56 PM
to be honest, although i always hope state players do well in the pros, his pro success is way down on my list below my selfish desire for him to beat UNC 4 times.
9/26/2009 7:25:02 PM
He turned down a million dollar contract to play pro baseball to come to state. I'm willing to bet baseball is where he goes
9/26/2009 7:56:18 PM
i think he could be a successful QB in the NFL. he is so savvy when it comes to what to do with the football. drew brees is only an inch taller than him and look at what he's doing. i hope russell gives football a chance, he could give rivers a run for his money if he played 4 seasons.

Yes I know when he was "drafted" but I also know the number offered to him. He was projected as 3rd/4th rounder during the 2007 draft meaning those were the type of offers he was going to receive had he actually chosen pro ball.
9/26/2009 11:23:33 PM
he's on an accelerated academic plan to graduate on 2010....don't think he'll be taking snaps much longer
9/27/2009 12:04:59 AM
does anybody know why this guy even chose to come to state?it isn't like one of those we want you philip rivers to play tight end or you'll have to go somewhere else to play qb . . .plz 2 stay even though i don't know why you are here russel?
9/27/2009 12:33:45 AM
a lot of schools didn't think he'd make it as a QB, and he also wanted to play baseballwe gave him the chance at both
9/27/2009 12:36:37 AM
oh then i guess it is like a p riv kind of thing
9/27/2009 12:40:10 AM
I'm pretty sure he came to state because we were the only school that was going to let him play baseball and football. He will leave and play baseball. I have no doubt. It's all about potential and a lot of times, especially with baseball...the longer you stick around in college the lower your pro stock drops. Also, the longer scouts know or think you are going to do something else, the lower your stock drops. And your pro stock is very important in baseball. It really dictates who is going to get the chance to play.I don't see Russel waiting around too much longer.

Do the Chisel shuffle...

This guy has a chance to be better than Philip Rivers in college. He is putting up some of the best stats in the history of the freaking game. If he quits football it will be an absolute travesty not to know what could have been.As far as being a pro QB I don't think he has any chance he simply doesn't have the arm.
9/28/2009 7:26:15 PM
^I'm pretty sure he has the arm. NO question. He doesn't have the height.
9/28/2009 7:39:05 PM
there are nfl qbs with his arm. im not talking just pennington eitherbut its not exactly idealand the fact that he's a "listed" 5'11 pretty much kills it
9/28/2009 7:40:55 PM
like chris leak..but shorter..
9/28/2009 7:45:23 PM
isn't drew brees also 5'11"?[Edited on September 28, 2009 at 7:48 PM. Reason : ok i see brees is listed as 6'0" but how much does one inch really matter?]
9/28/2009 7:47:39 PM
brees is listed at 6' and is probably like 5'11 1/2wilson is listed at 5'11 and probably closer to 5'10[Edited on September 28, 2009 at 7:50 PM. Reason : brees is an outlier at 6 flat himself. hell, you dont see many successful NFL qbs under 6'2]

9/28/2009 7:51:15 PM
He has a fairly weak arm. Combined with his lack of height and that he loses preparation time by playing baseball I just don't see how he becomes an NFL QB. His speed/agility is a huge weapon in college but he's not Vick or anything, it wouldn't translate in the NFL that well.
9/28/2009 7:53:04 PM
he's not returning for next year. he's already a senior in terms of credit hours. he'll leave after this year for the MLB. I really don't have much doubt about this. It sucks, but then Glennon will have 3 years to do his thing. I'll miss seeing RW do some of the crazy shit he does though
9/28/2009 8:42:12 PM
seneca wallace sucks hard chode
9/28/2009 9:31:19 PM
RW didn't really hit very well in the CPL.. and didn't play a whole lot (and when he did, i don't think it was very well) during the school season. I don't know why people say he's going to be some huge pick that's going to get him to stop going to school. unless he has graduated and doesn't wanna go to grad school of course.

Russell Wilson: Great Football Player or GREATEST Football Player?
9/28/2009 9:39:18 PM
9/28/2009 10:07:49 PM
he's been in school for 3 years now. this is his 3rd, he redshirted in football. so after next spring baseball season he can be drafted again[Edited on September 28, 2009 at 10:09 PM. Reason : ~]
9/28/2009 10:08:54 PM
^what he said.I mean, there's always a chance e could take some grad school courses and stay, but I don't see that happening. If I recall correctly, his father is in and out of the hospital with health issues, and he has (a) younger sibling(s) that want to go to college, and he wants to help them out financially.
9/28/2009 10:17:19 PM
I have heard the same thing about his father and needing money
9/28/2009 10:38:51 PM
my hope is that he plays next year in what would be his senior year as a student then goes to baseball. that only puts him 1 year behind most college players, though of course he'd still be way behind on the learning curve. course i tried to delude myself into thinking hickson wasnt just here because of the 1 year rule
9/29/2009 12:05:55 AM
he better be really good at baseball if his goal is to support his dad. maybe the first round makes a mil, and thats partly to get you through 2-3-4 years of makin $800-1200 a month playing baseball. plus, most people that get drafted don't make it. even the really really good ones. but then again being a junior is when you have the highest draft stock, so maybe he will be able to go.
9/29/2009 12:11:19 AM
we might be lucky enough to get him for one more year
9/29/2009 12:13:07 AM
i think he's capable of starting for the panthers right now
9/29/2009 12:14:29 AM
My point is Seneca Wallace, while not a great NFL QB, has stuck in the league. Both are about 5'11 205 mobile QBs with similar arms. As more NFL teams adopt spread-type offenses, it becomes more viable. A backup QB in the NFL makes more cash than minor league (and many of the major league) baseball players. While baseball does look more likely for his future, the gap is narrowing.

my biggest fear about losing Wilson to whatever (baseball, leaving early, graduating, or other) is the development of our O-line and WRs. I hope TOB is really working to beef up those positions and improve our performance. I believe Glennon has the throwing arm, but he's not a scrambling QB, so a good O-line and WRs are a must for him. Without those, Glennon could turn out to be another Jay Davis.

29 td 1 intSounds like a QB to me.
9/29/2009 9:17:36 AM
baseball.. job security.
9/29/2009 10:31:33 AM
tossup at this point. but he'll be a football player #1, baseball #2 by the end of this season.
9/29/2009 10:44:05 AM
His 1 pick was a hail mary. I say that's a solid QB
9/29/2009 12:07:01 PM
^His one pick was a long pass down the sideline that he overthrew vs. Clemson. Not a hail mary.
9/29/2009 12:09:42 PM
I would say a 29 to 1 td INT ratio is something people outside of ncsu fans would care about. The potential to be first team all conf 4 consecutive years would be something the media just may pick up on as well
