im not going to tell you what to do but you need to have a bill of sale if the car is worth a fuck. so if it blows up while someone is driving it back to SC. they cant sue you for selling with out knowing the problems.

I sold my car on craigslist in 15 mins

I downloaded a general car selling contract off the internet somewhere, made sure it said "AS IS" clearly on it, told the guy it was a POS and as soon as the title was in his name it was his responsibility, he said ok, that was that. I always wondered how much longer that car lasted

If you post an ad, leave a phone number. Anyone not willing to use a phone isn't worth a damn. Don't give out your address until they say, "I'm coming right now."(Otherwise you'll deal with waiting for plenty of no-shows.)

Don't let people test drive without leaving their own car, or ride along. Only accept cash or cashiers check. Have a basic bill of sale printed up and ready to go. Find a place with a notary ahead of time(kinkos on hillsborough street). If you want to be completely legal, don't let him drive off with your plate and promise to return it...offer to drop the car off at his house instead. Don't cancel your insurance until you turn in the plate at the DMV.

Expect lowball offers, and don't get offended by them. Throw 'em a bone by knocking $100 off your price at a time. If he won't deal, thank him for his offer and say you'll keep his phone number.

Accentuate the positive. Keep your mouth shut about the negative, unless it's obvious or dangerous.

For starters...When you're selling a S2000 and people show up with their wives. It sucks telling someone that their wife can sit on the porch.

And then there was the dude who brought four kids with him; two of whom were over 14. WTF? Make that 14 year old look after the little kids and just bring the one whose actually getting the car.

It should be obvious to potential buyers that you're not going to let them take the car without you in it, but you really need to specify in your ad that you will be riding on any and all test drives. Believe it or not, random strangers seem to think you'll be cool with just tossing them the keys.

For reals. Talked to a guy last week who took at 09 Civic Si with 7500 miles up there...They offered him $15k. The Honda dealer offered him $18k. They offered me $11k on a Jeep which I sold shortly after for $14k and they offered my girlfriend $600 for a car which I quickly sold on Craigslist for $3800 or something.

Don't even waste your time unless you just don't care about your money at all.

eh when I sold my car I didn't ride with them. Might have been stupid but I was selling the car for $1200 so if they had stolen the car I would have made out because they showed up to my house with a much nicer car.

Unless someone popped up in the passenger seat of their car and took off shortly after they drove away in your car.

Or the car they drove to your house in was stolen and they were basically looking to swap it out for a different stolen vehicle.

Probably unlikely, but it happens often enough.

You can, however, go to http://www.kbb.com/ and get the blue book on your car so you have an idea of where to price it.

I don't think KBB is all that wonderful. I guess it gives you a ballpark, but I've never really seen KBB be that close.

you have to factor in the cost of selling the car, going on test drives and the liability/problems that could come from selling a car on craigslist. I am not a car salesman and neither are most people so why not just drive it to a place. Get the sale value (obviously lower than the purchase value) and be done with it in less than an hour? Dealers will pretend they are giving you more for a car but they are really just marking up the car you're buying from them.

Sure you can get purchase value for a car if you sell it yourself but you dont know how long that may take or what problems may arise.

carmax should be an absolute last resort. i was trying to sell my firebird when the KBB value was around $2500-$3000, and those lowball assholes offered me $900.

^not my experience. I had a car that was having idle problems and the paint had been ruined by sap and they gave me like new kbb value on it. Sounds like you were looking at the wrong value or they made some type of mistake. Their system quite is flawless and because of their size they can give people fair value and still make money.

1. give you kbb trade in value
2. sell your car for kbb sell value

now you could cut them out as a middle man and make the money yourself but then you have to become a used car salesman for a ___however long it takes to sell your car.
