Anyone ever been there? Going down there mid-September for a friend of mine's "bachelor party". Not really a bachelor party, but a long-weekend of gettin drunk and fishing a month before his wedding with the guys from the wedding party.I know, its deserted and all you can really do is sleep, drink, and fish... but just wondering if any of you guys have been there and what you say about it.Are there such things as like, cell phone service, power, running water, etc?[Edited on August 27, 2009 at 3:28 PM. no has lived there since the early 70's. you can take fishing trips over to the island from ocracoke and i think they have tours. the entire island is infested with mosquitos i would suggest taking a year's supply of Off

yes, enjoy getting ass raped by mosquitos. lots of them. and the vicious flies. the bf catches good bait over there in the little inlets, and i saw a dead turtle. thats about it.

we've got bug suits we plan on wearing, as well as stocking up on the bug spray.should i plan on cell phone service or just leave the cell phone behind? (iPhone,3G,AT&T)do we need to prepare for wildlife such as gators or anything that may be a threat?

watch out for those motherfucking green flies. (horse flies?)they are terrible. Ruined a trip to Portsmouth for me once.

cell phone will not work there. no power. no water. freaking horrible flies and mosquitos. I would recommend that y'all camp on ocracoke instead (AT&T doesnt have service here either).

supposedly we're staying in a cabin down there that has water, and a stove.

do yourself (and the bachelor) a favor and just go to ocracoke. you can sleep, drink, and fish there too. plus they offer boat rides over to portsmouth island if you really want to go. when i was at ocracoke, the only sentences i ever heard people speak about portsmouth always had the word "mosquitos" in there somewhere.[Edited on August 27, 2009 at 5:45 PM. well i've heard from a few people that it is an "Awesome" experience and they look forward to the trip every year they go.

i.e."It was awesome once we got on the shore, until we got attacked by mosquitos when the wind died down."

I didn't even realize you could stay overnight in cabin, tent, etc. Some of the houses that used to be there when people were living on the island are still standing, so imagine the infrastructure is still there to support electricity and running water in a few locations. There is no chance in hell you're getting phone service out there though.

yeah supposedly the cabin has running water, bunk beds, and a stove.about it.

Stay on the beach. If you go into the brush in the middle of the island you will pay for it by the mosquitos and green head flies. They are still on the beach but the breeze helps a little. The fishing is great. Lots of flounder on the sound side of the island. the 4 car ferry is barely a 4 car ferry. I had a blast there minus the insect bites, but the fishing is well worth it.
