I'm the same way when I work out. I need a goal/motivation.I've found that if I actually write down exactly how many sets of an exercise I'm going to do, I'm a lot more likely to follow through with them all. Otherwise I might cheat myself and once things get HARD, I'll subconsciously tell myself it's ok to stop.I try and plan everything out in a small notebook and take that to the gym with me. It keeps me honest.

my motivation for working out has a lot to do with looking at the general population of adults 10, 20, 30 years older than me and seeing what people turn out like who don't eat right and take care of their bodies EDIT: but yes, personal goals help. And especially at first, just work HARD to make sure its a routine. Pick certain days of the week that you are almost always free and lock in your times and try not to let them slip. Sure its ok to skip now and then to spend time with friends who invite you out or something, but it gets really easy to get out of the habit if you start missing a day here or a day there early on.[Edited on August 27, 2009 at 1:41 PM. I'm not sure you understand the principles behind weight loss. "Toning" is really a misnomer, and weight lifting will get you as much, if not more, benefits to your body image as cardiovascular exercise. If you want to improve your cardiovascular system, yes, by all means go run. But if you want to improve how you look, weight lifting is the answer. I seriously doubt you have "lots of muscle" if you're referring to it as "untoned." Aerobics aren't going to help you at all in that department.

Net energy content intake - net energy expended = net gain/loss.Primarily, one must either cut back on caloric intake, perform work to accelerate rate of energy burn, or both. In order to optimally lose weight, it's best to build muscle and improve the efficiency of your cardiovascular system. I think we're simply arguing semantics here, and the overall goal is to improve my delivery of energy to muscle tissue, improve my heart and vascular health, and to lose weight. I doubt you're "diesel" if you can't see your genitals due to your fat. What are your numbers on bench/squat/deadlift? If that is your problem, than your issue is not about doing cardiovascular fitness but about reducing your caloric intake.If you don't work your muscles to hypertrophy, then they will begin to atrophy. You may lose weight, but you will have flabby skin sitting over extremely small amounts of muscle.Would you rather have the body of a sprinter or that of a distance runner? One of these is ripped, the other is overly skinny. One of these does strength training, the other does large amounts of cardiovascular activity.

I need a balance in between.Bench...I dunno, it's been awhile. I'd probably have a hard time doing over 225 right now. Maybe 250.Deadlift, probably in the neighborhood of 400 to 500.The last I checked, I was able to do 1100 pound leg presses. I haven't lost much if any of that.

What I'm saying is that, if you want to "not get out of breath," you can supplement a strength training program with cardio (say, a 1 mile jog on rest days), but the bulk of your physical body changes are going to come from strength training. If your goal is to get rid of the large amounts of fat on your body, you are going to get it much faster from strength training, and look better in the end.

i'll offer a couple of tips...- get a personal trainer so you have a commitment to meet some one or take a class like linda said- pack you gym bag with you and take it with you to work. go straight to the gym after work. i've found it hard to go to the gym and leave the house once i've gotten home from work- get plenty of sleep. no one wants to go to the gym if they are tired.- keep at it. once you get into the habit of going you'll want to keep going and you'll feel like shit if you miss a day.

Not like this is for everyone...but I find having 2 dogs anxious to go out and walk or rungets me motivated. At least someone's excited about the workout. Also, definitely get some non-flaky friends to work out with you. Will bring out the competitiveside for sure.

i'd be happy to be a cardio buddy on Sundays if you want to improve CV health...it's my only rest day of the week in my new HST, low volume, high frequency program...I do live in the Brier Creek area...been trying to find a time with some other TWWers to do some running @ Umstead. Nothing too intense though....likely in the 5k range @ 30min, ~10min/mile. I do HIIT for cardio in the pool during the week. As far as lifting/weight loss, I could guide you too but I'm no personal trainer, although I've taken the prep class for ACE certification, just never went through with it. Took it mostly for my benefit, rather than getting a job in the field. Since Jan 08, I've lost over 110lbs and nearly tripled my starting strength on the majority of the lifts that count. From my experience, I'd attribute 90% of my success to diet and willpower, viewing exercise as just a means for expending calories. I'm no nutritionist by any stretch of imagination but I do agree with you, so long as you've created that caloric deficit, you should net results. I used to try all these keto/warrior/caveman diets with the same deficit as traditional diets, sure I'd see some immediate weight loss, not real weight loss though, and in the end of the month long cycle on the diet, the results were really no different than the traditional plans. Never lost strength though, definitely did not want to risk losing LBM, so I always keep my caloric deficit within 500 cals of my perceived maintenance and more or less have just been recomping for the past 4 months after my last bulk. I've been to the Planet Fitness up on HW 70 and off of Western, hated HW 70, no pull up bars? no squat cages? 100% smith machines? plus they set off the lunk alert when I was setting down some heavy DBs...how else am I supposed to lightly put down DBs without a spotter? w/e it was a $3 30 day trial over winter break...I definitely took more than $3 worth of shits in toilet paper from their establishment, at least the locker rooms were nice. I've been to a Lifestyle Family Fitness up in IL with my LDR girl and that place is really top notch, but I really really like the NCSU facilities...it's like a grungier, less trendy Lifestyle, more of a guy's(Read: Diesel) gym. Although Lifestyle had a water slide and their steam room smelled of cough drops.
