I'll be out in San Francisco over Labor Day weekend for my cousin's wedding and I'm thinking about making a day trip Saturday morning - Sunday afternoon down to Big Sur. I'll be driving a rental car, looking to camp, and not spend too terribly much money. So, I'm wondering if any of you have recommendations on the one or two places I MUST see out there in that 24 hour block. And go!

You can also make it to the redwood forest in aptos if you want. That is around an hour from there.
8/24/2009 1:25:53 PM
how are you getting down there? I'm assuming you're taking the PCH. If not, then you should!
8/24/2009 1:50:25 PM
Yes. But take US1 (a must) and stop by Santa Cruz on the way down there. Also, Point Reyes (en route) is amazing. That whole drive is killer.Just get up in the early AM and head down there. Don't take the shorter way on the more central highway, it's not nearly as scenic.

If you are looking for any advice on stuff off of CA-1 in Marin shoot me a PM... I loved traveling to all of the hole in the wall places there the three years I lived there. There are some really, really cool little places to get a drink or just see up there...

Pretty much everything that isn't first come-first serve is booked. This could be interesting
8/26/2009 6:35:40 PM
If you have the time and have trouble with stuff being booked, I'd suggest continuing down to Morro Bay, the drive past Big Sur is just as beautiful.

why are there no people on the beaches?no access/too rough/too cold?
4/27/2010 1:00:18 PM
^ yesits very cold there, even if its warm in the sun, the wind is chillingthere are also a lot of signs saying that its not safe to swim, the current is too rough and also too many rocksthere are some places i saw people swimming, lovers point in monterey for example but they were wearing wet suits and most were just in the first 10ft of water (some were surfing and dodging massive rocks)
