The new motor Ford is putting into the Taurus SHO (and possibly in the F-150?) is looking pretty impressive. It's a twin turbo direct injected DOHC 3.5L V6, with variable cam timing on both the intake and exhaust cams. Too bad the SHO is going to be a pig.

There's something weird about paying $40 large for a Taurus. Probably also something weird about a Taurus doing a 4 wheel burnout

Dont get me wrong, its about 300 times better than Ford's best sedan offering of a few years ago, the Five Hundred. Lol, what a joke that car was.

in case you're wondering about that insanely flat torque curve, it's because torque is ecu-limited to 350lbft

my thoughts exactly

i like it, but like mine better. would love to run into one on a nice abandoned road late at night in the g8. from a dig the awd would make it a race, i would expect to pull away from a roll though.

Now That I'm home and can see the pictures posted, the torque curve looks like what I've got in the 944. That in addition to the AWD should make it a badass ride...

g8=6.0l 360hp RWD
SHO= 3.5l 360hp AWD

ill take the SHO to about 90mph with the pea shooter turbos. ive got a feeling the gearing is gonna slow it down up top, as do most awd cars

the motor in the pontiac is going to be putting out almost double the displacement in 2010

just my thoughts though. I like both cars though

according to what I've been reading, it also has an intake manifold with a small plenum volume and a boost control system that makes both of these small turbos (49mm compressor exducer) spin within an extremely tight speed tolerance. plus the exhaust manifolds have short runners all designed for spool.
also, with variable cam timing on both intake and exhaust valves you can increase valve overlap during spool and then reduce it up top to maintain consistent torque.

it's a complete system designed for V8-like response.

Its a nice motor, but I think its overkill. That G37 auto sedan easily smoked it, 0-60 and 1/4 mile. Dont even mention the braking and handling.

The Big Three finally remembered how to build good cars.

Will they ever remember how to build light (or at the very least not overweight) cars?

its a muuuuch larger car tho... its like saying the mustang out runs the charger and has less power... and is a much smaller car.

^It's larger, but they do share the same wheelbase. The G8 GT is 6 inches shorter but has a 2 inch longer wheelbase and stomps the SHO in acceleration. The SHO weighs 400lbs more than the G8 GT, that's just ridiculous. 1/4 mile, braking, slalom, lateral Gs aren't even close.

The SHO's rated fuel economy is 17/25 whereas the G8 Gt's is 15/24. That's close enough to be almost the same (since EPA figures are a crapshoot). Base price of $37,995 versus $29,995.

It's awesome that Ford came out with this car, it is worlds better than the last SHO and barely more expensive (inflation adjusted). Unfortunately for them GM's done better.

GM "doing better" never stopped Ford from selling quite a few more cars, see the Mustang, or the F-150.

^^Alas, once Pontiac is done, so is the G8. Lutz has publicly said it will *not* be sold as a Chevy, probably due to pressure from the unions that now own a piece of GM. And the Taurus will wipe the floor with the Impala SS. So the "done better" phase for GM will be short-lived.

So true. I never figured it out.

^^I honestly don't get it. The G8 and Camaro share underpinnings so I think its bullshit for Lutz to say its gone. It's the best sedan they build, move the tooling to the states.

If this is the kind of bullshit logic and business plans they run then fuck GM I hope they go out of business.

you forgot to mention that PONTIAC JUST GOT THE AXE....

yes i would never own this taurus but its also not competing with the other hotrod 4 doors maybe if they make a shelby addition or something. This is more targeting the other ALL WHEEL DRIVE luxo cruisers like audi a6's, acura RL I would much rather own an g8.... but its not going to be alive much longer (rwd malibu??)

that bypass valve looks a lot like the ones VW put on the FSI engines (has since been revised). they are notorious for blowing a hole in the diaphragm.

GM is keeping Holden, right? I know there was some discussion, though I'm not sure what became of it, of selling off Vauxhall/Opel as part of the bailout.

Perhaps moving the tooling would be prohibitively expensive, though. I think the issue was that, since the unions have a big say in GM as part owners now, they're "putting their foot down" and saying no more captive imports, which closes off the Australia -> US pipeline for the time being.

^the underpinnings of the Camaro are shared with the G8, how expensive could building it in Canada really be?

Given that Unions control a lot of GM now I don't think I'll ever support the company. What happened with GM is about as un-American as you can get.

Ok, ever since I first heard of a SHO I've been pronouncing it "S-H-O". However, I just saw the commercial for the new one, and the guy says "Show" instead of saying the letters. Just struck me as sounding very stupid - "Taurus Show".

"SHO'NUFF" is the first vanity plate that comes to mind

There used to be one (the original one) next to our house when I was little, and I always had a soft spot for that car, especially because it had a Yamaha engine, and made 220 hp which was quite high in those days.

This new car has a good engine and potential, but it weighs way too much.

Looking at the photos, I have to ask. What's with the thick ass front profile. The hood goes up like 8-10 inches higher than the headlights.

What up chunky.

not sure if this is [old] or not, but the latest rumor I'm hearing from a friend who works at a dealership is that this motor will be in the Mustang and the F150. No word whether they will be replacing some of the respective V8 offerings for those vehicles.
