The new motor Ford is putting into the Taurus SHO (and possibly in the F-150?) is looking pretty impressive. It's a twin turbo direct injected DOHC 3.5L V6, with variable cam timing on both the intake and exhaust cams. Too bad the SHO is going to be a pig.
8/19/2009 1:58:47 PM
ive been impressed with this engine/car
8/19/2009 2:16:19 PM
Too bad it gets whipped by the cheaper Pontiac G8 GT (and/or GXP).
8/19/2009 2:38:58 PM
oh and the Ric0rz will be clamoring for this one: electronic blowoff valves
8/19/2009 2:57:26 PM
Is this fwd?
8/19/2009 3:36:30 PM
There's something weird about paying $40 large for a Taurus. Probably also something weird about a Taurus doing a 4 wheel burnout
8/19/2009 3:37:37 PM
^^awd
8/19/2009 4:25:08 PM
Ahh.. Well, I'll refrain from hatin on it.
8/19/2009 4:33:24 PM
it doesn't get my dick hard, but i guess if you absolutely insist on buying american it'd be a decent car
8/19/2009 4:36:20 PM
Dont get me wrong, its about 300 times better than Ford's best sedan offering of a few years ago, the Five Hundred. Lol, what a joke that car was.
8/19/2009 4:57:52 PM
Put it in a Crown Vic and go head to head with the Charger
8/19/2009 5:02:23 PM
in case you're wondering about that insanely flat torque curve, it's because torque is ecu-limited to 350lbft
8/19/2009 5:20:51 PM
i like it, but like mine better. would love to run into one on a nice abandoned road late at night in the g8. from a dig the awd would make it a race, i would expect to pull away from a roll though.
8/19/2009 5:40:17 PM
Now That I'm home and can see the pictures posted, the torque curve looks like what I've got in the 944. That in addition to the AWD should make it a badass ride...

My 3.0 Vulcan could take it!
8/19/2009 8:35:54 PM
8/19/2009 9:22:10 PM
So it gets, what, 19mpg?
8/19/2009 10:02:19 PM
Its a nice motor, but I think its overkill. That G37 auto sedan easily smoked it, 0-60 and 1/4 mile. Dont even mention the braking and handling.
8/19/2009 11:05:01 PM
well, its got a nice engine, but doesnt it weigh in at something like 4300lbs?
8/20/2009 8:33:46 AM
The Big Three finally remembered how to build good cars. Will they ever remember how to build light (or at the very least not overweight) cars?

^It's larger, but they do share the same wheelbase. The G8 GT is 6 inches shorter but has a 2 inch longer wheelbase and stomps the SHO in acceleration. The SHO weighs 400lbs more than the G8 GT, that's just ridiculous. 1/4 mile, braking, slalom, lateral Gs aren't even close. The SHO's rated fuel economy is 17/25 whereas the G8 Gt's is 15/24. That's close enough to be almost the same (since EPA figures are a crapshoot). Base price of $37,995 versus $29,995.It's awesome that Ford came out with this car, it is worlds better than the last SHO and barely more expensive (inflation adjusted). Unfortunately for them GM's done better.
8/20/2009 3:34:23 PM
how has noone else commented on the fact that Ford decided to call the turbo-design "Ecoboost"?
8/20/2009 3:43:56 PM
not really surprising. they're trying to play on the whole "green" thing.
8/20/2009 4:24:48 PM
GM "doing better" never stopped Ford from selling quite a few more cars, see the Mustang, or the F-150.
8/20/2009 4:26:12 PM
^^Alas, once Pontiac is done, so is the G8. Lutz has publicly said it will *not* be sold as a Chevy, probably due to pressure from the unions that now own a piece of GM. And the Taurus will wipe the floor with the Impala SS. So the "done better" phase for GM will be short-lived.

that bypass valve looks a lot like the ones VW put on the FSI engines (has since been revised). they are notorious for blowing a hole in the diaphragm.
8/21/2009 1:11:16 AM
a friend of mine is predicting significant problems with this motor for the first model year or two. we'll see.
8/21/2009 12:22:45 PM
^^^^Holden is 100% owned by GM and has been for a long long time. So crossing it out is just silly.
8/21/2009 12:31:38 PM
GM is keeping Holden, right? I know there was some discussion, though I'm not sure what became of it, of selling off Vauxhall/Opel as part of the bailout.Perhaps moving the tooling would be prohibitively expensive, though. I think the issue was that, since the unions have a big say in GM as part owners now, they're "putting their foot down" and saying no more captive imports, which closes off the Australia -> US pipeline for the time being.[Edited on August 21, 2009 at 2:14 PM. 8/21/2009 2:12:41 PM
^the underpinnings of the Camaro are shared with the G8, how expensive could building it in Canada really be?Given that Unions control a lot of GM now I don't think I'll ever support the company. What happened with GM is about as un-American as you can get.
8/21/2009 2:42:39 PM
Ok, ever since I first heard of a SHO I've been pronouncing it "S-H-O". However, I just saw the commercial for the new one, and the guy says "Show" instead of saying the letters. Just struck me as sounding very stupid - "Taurus Show"."SHO'NUFF" is the first vanity plate that comes to mind

There used to be one (the original one) next to our house when I was little, and I always had a soft spot for that car, especially because it had a Yamaha engine, and made 220 hp which was quite high in those days. This new car has a good engine and potential, but it weighs way too much.
8/22/2009 7:03:33 PM
^^^ !
8/23/2009 1:04:03 AM
Looking at the photos, I have to ask. What's with the thick ass front profile. The hood goes up like 8-10 inches higher than the headlights. What up chunky.
8/23/2009 11:38:27 PM
not sure if this is [old] or not, but the latest rumor I'm hearing from a friend who works at a dealership is that this motor will be in the Mustang and the F150. No word whether they will be replacing some of the respective V8 offerings for those vehicles.
10/7/2009 4:22:50 PM
Yeah that rumor is nothing new.Is anyone else disguisted by the size of this thing?
10/7/2009 4:35:02 PM
i'm more interested by the engine. its easy to like a direct injection twin turbo v6. even if it is produced by ford. ( I am also interested in the 335i power plant fwiw)
10/7/2009 4:46:16 PM
I saw a new Taurus in the parking lot today, huge car.
10/7/2009 5:12:36 PM
