I thought we should have a separate running thread for the delinquents that are beginning to sprout under the tutelage of Butch Davis. I think most knew that Miami was known as Thug U when Butch coached the Hurricanes, and some predicted UNC would become the same upon Butch's hiring. Now don't get me wrong, it hasn't become the full fledged Miami University of the late 90's, but we can use this thread to follow the developments of what might become the new Thug U.I'll go ahead and start it off with a few of the recent developments since the spring. These may be noted in other threads, but I wanted to have them all in one place for the purpose of this thread.Anthony Elzy faces misdemeanor drug charges for possession of marijuana. http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/uncs-elzy-faces-drug-chargeKevin Bryant (the largest player on UNC's roster) was charged with misdemeanor assault on a female.http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/bryant-off-unc-teamDonte Page-Moss charged with simple assault for fighting with a teammate in the dorms.http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/uncs-paige-moss-charged-with-simple-assaultI'm pretty sure there will be more to come in the future.

I was thinking this last night as I read about all the arrests....dear GOD I hope so!
8/14/2009 10:31:11 AM
I'm hoping we'll out-class UNC by winning all our games.

the teammate fight thing is bogus thoughteammates fight all the time, i dont see why that had to be charged
8/14/2009 12:55:21 PM
^^ They also have a pretty extensive rap sheet under Meyer. Many of the arrests being felonies.http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_college_uf/2009/06/janoris-jenkinscharge-misdemeanor-affray-and-resisting-arrest-without-violence-for-his-role-in-a-may-30-fight-outside-a-down.html

^ Yes I understood the connection you were trying to make. I was merely going a step further and highlighting their offensive proficiency. In other words, at least their felons can put points on the board.

I just think that it is interesting how the N&O hasn't plastered this all over the front page of their sports section as they do when 1 NCSU player gets arrested.

8/15/2009 6:36:00 AM
8/15/2009 12:16:17 PM
that's not even true. what are you basing this on?
8/15/2009 3:17:02 PM
Probably basing it on how every time we come into any contest with hype we promptly lay eggs. You haven't noticed this?Gator Bowl year and the UMd game to be bowl eligible (2 seasons ago, right?) we forgot to dress for are a couple in recent memory that come to mind. Though, I wouldn't really call that a hype game per se, it's still a situation we had a chance to do big things and we were lost in the forest.OSU at their place (huge underdogs) vs OSU at our place (some gave us a reasonable chance to win, it wasn't really close).Ummm. Miami game where Game Day showed up and Devin Hester silenced us on the opening kickoff. Lots of hype for that game.Phils Senior year when we showed up at Wake for the second game of the season with a ton of hype and got dropped by 14. I think it was worse until we started pressing in the 4th quarter trying to make a game of it.I suppose to make this an accurate argument I'd add more underdog games. For that, we can talk about at Clemson in 2002 where TA was unconscious (which, btw is what got the hype going for UMd the next week when we blew it). How about Texas Tech that same year when we were underdogs.I'm with Erios, I'd love to fly under the radar until it's apparent the guys we have on the field don't feed off hype (which seems to be the case with TOBs boys) and do their job regardless of the situation.[Edited on August 15, 2009 at 5:51 PM. 8/15/2009 5:41:32 PM
that doesn't mean we do well as an underdog.this is so fucking stupid i can't even stand to argue it.
8/15/2009 5:50:28 PM
You're not even attempting an argument? We do well as an underdog, QED.
8/15/2009 5:51:55 PM
we do not consistently do well as an underdog.in fact, no team does, b/c that is impossible. and to WANT to be an underdog every fucking year is flat out stupid.
8/15/2009 5:56:25 PM
I think you have the concept wrong.
8/15/2009 6:30:43 PM
41-10Never forget.
8/15/2009 7:18:36 PM
Here is the distinction. We dont want to be the underdog in that we are a inferior team and shouldnt win. As in our football team is actually worse than theirs. We DO want to be the underdog according to the media, the internet hype, the gameday hype, and all that comes with it. We may not in fact be the inferior team, but we are expected to lose. Every team last year and the year before thought they would beat us. They overlooked us. You want them to assume they will win.Its a thin line between being an underdog where you are hungry vs being an overwhelming underdog where the team doesnt actually think it can win.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The other argument is that you want to be so good you know you are going to win. To do this you must be a power in the sport and are actually that good. Like USC Flordia etc. But you cannot apply this argument to NC State in any sport because we essentially suck ass at almost all team sports.Give TOB the next 2-3 years and we can start applying this argument to the football team.[Edited on August 15, 2009 at 7:37 PM. 2010 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!
8/15/2009 9:49:47 PM
RE: the UNC bball pic.I'd take our guys dressing like thugs (and actually, you know, qualifying academically) if we won 2 natty's in that time period... small price to pay. Archie is jealous of those outfits btw...
8/16/2009 12:13:53 AM
yeah, i don't think that's the point [of the pic]. Our team could easily out-thug them but the point is how student-athletes have changed in 20 years.and the fact that most college athletes in the 80s either:a. appreciated the fact they were able to attend college due to the fact they could shoot a ball, otherwise they would be selling drugs or chicken sammichesb. actually belonged there. Given the context of the thread, I'm pretty sure it is attributing a widespread theme in college sports to solely UNC. No?
8/16/2009 12:17:23 AM
i think the point of the thread is that heroes are truly dead. That picture or the entire unc (or any) basketball team does not represent 99 percent of the student body.

lol i just got it. everyone in ST is trolling me. good one guys.
8/16/2009 11:21:58 PM
No one is talking about wanting to be statistical underdogs, just about the mentality. The plucky and underrated group of players overcoming the odds to beat an overconfident powerhouse is just so much more inspirational...Granted, it's only played to that extreme in (shitty) inspirational sports movies, but the non-exaggerated version still works. No one wants to have the scores/record of an underdog, but people play harder when they think they have something to prove.[Edited on August 16, 2009 at 11:25 PM. Reason : .]
8/16/2009 11:25:19 PM

like Miami in the 80'sand Nebraska in the 90'sand USC in the aughtsyou know why they won a shit ton?I promise you it wasn't because they went into games with an "underdog mentality"
