What do I do?I don't have the piece of mail yet, as that is in North Carolina.
8/5/2009 7:41:13 PM
Can you change your voter registration district?
8/5/2009 7:46:09 PM
write a letter and mail it to the DA's office (or whatever, the address for excuses is on the notice, and you could probably call the county courthouse to get it). ask to delay it or get out of it.
8/5/2009 7:57:43 PM
my mom used to just call them and say i was in college or underway on a boat and theyd just take it.
8/5/2009 9:00:30 PM
i had this.just say you're out of state on the thing and its dismissed.
8/5/2009 9:00:51 PM
I got called for jury duty while I was living in Japan. My mom called them and just told them I was in another country and they excused me.
8/5/2009 9:26:14 PM
use this classic Liz Lemon line"ummm...i don't really think its fair to put me on a jury because i can read everyone's mind""excused!"
8/5/2009 9:42:33 PM
^ Classic.Sounds like it's ridiculously easy to get out of jury duty. Awesome. Thanks!
8/5/2009 10:17:05 PM
it is if you take the time to tell them. most ppl dont and therefore get in trouble over it. just dont use work as an excuse, they do verify sometimes i know.
8/5/2009 10:19:49 PM
I had my boss send them a letter saying they needed me, worked just fine...
8/5/2009 10:34:12 PM
My brother is forwarding the form with the official affidavit, but I'll contact the DA anyway.[Edited on August 5, 2009 at 10:56 PM. Reason : frigging keyboard/mouse]

All of you people trying to get out of jury duty should be ashamed of yourselves.1) it's a civil responsibility we have to keep legislative machine turning by judging our peers for their crimes (a small price to pay for liberty)and 2) maybe HAD you gone to jury duty, there wouldn't be so many STUPID precedents for retarded lawsuits and stupid punishments out there.
8/6/2009 9:58:24 AM
it just got real up in here
8/6/2009 10:04:34 AM
^^There was a town near where I live in CO that was forcing people to go to jury duty. They would literally pull them out of grocery stores at 8 AM and tell them to report at 8:30. There was no getting out of it if you lived in the town.Boy, I'd love to be on trial and see that jury. My peers, my ass.
8/6/2009 10:11:42 AM
i'm 32 and i've never been summonedi'd love to go
8/6/2009 1:35:37 PM

That's very American of all of you
8/6/2009 2:42:17 PM
for the record i would try to get out of it if summoned again. not many of my peers in DC get arrested and make it to trial...

I really wish I could make it, but it's just not economically feasible to travel between MD and NC.
8/6/2009 3:08:10 PM
I want to get to try one of those crazy bitches who spills coffee on herself in mcdonalds and tries to sue.
8/6/2009 3:19:30 PM
I understand being summoned in a state where you're not currently living is a good reason to ask to get out of it. But just getting out of it because you don't feel like going it not right.
8/6/2009 3:53:50 PM
^^
8/6/2009 4:12:05 PM
I've been summoned twice so I've changed counties twice.

8/6/2009 6:49:42 PM
ive been summond 3 times, i had class the first two times so i got excused, by sending a letter. the third time i had no excuse so i went and was sent home after 20 minutes with pay because the case that day was settled by plea bargain.
8/7/2009 11:49:26 AM
^That's a good point to make. A lot of time, even if you go, you don't have to actually go through with the jury duty because something like that happens. Case ends with a plea bargain, you get dismissed by a lawyer during the juror selection process because of your radical white-power racist views, etc.My history teacher in high school got summoned once, was sooo excited about having the opportunity to do it, got dismissed. She was the only person I've ever seen be sad about not getting to do jury duty
8/7/2009 12:16:14 PM
i got summoned. i actually got selected. trial was interesting, but stressful. not sure id do it again.
8/8/2009 11:47:40 AM
My experience. I show up and they play the lotto. One group of winners are the people they actually call into a room to continue the jury process - to see if they will actually use you in a trial. The other group(s) of winners are the people that get to go home because the cases they have for that day don't necessitate the entire group of people they have waiting to be called for selection. The losers are the people that sit there for 10 hours (no lie) while they hear people getting called into either one of those groups. These guys go home when the courts shut down for the day.Guess which group I was in.
8/8/2009 10:47:32 PM
I wonder how they select people to call. It seems like some people get called all the time and others never.
8/8/2009 10:58:06 PM
clcluppe thanks for posting that. I actually had no idea that was the reason behind the massive award either....
8/8/2009 11:08:50 PM

With regards to Jury Duty what is deemed as a "valid excuse?"If i plan a vacation to which I have booked reservations plane/hotel/cruise/etc will they let you out? Or do you have to sacrifice your pre-paid $600 so that you can perform your "duty"?
8/30/2009 9:03:56 PM
if you never register to vote. can you be jury summoned?
8/30/2009 9:18:34 PM
yes, my dad never registered to vote and he got jury duty and was selected for a murder trial
