So i bought a 2003 toyota avalon xl back in december, and discovered the sub was blown (it has the JBL speaker system in it). I went to one car audio place and they said you could only replace it at the toyota place or it would be a fire hazzard (which would cost $300). Can anyone help out there????

its an 8" sub. thats what i thought....but they told me that toyota made it so you couldnt do that...that it would be a fire hazzard if you just put an after market 8". i looked online but havent been able to find much

ive never understood why dealers do that. "if one speaker goes out you need to replace the entire system" Is this really true. Im not up to par on my audio shit

buy a cheap 8" free air sub..think pioneer makes them still, and a small amp. or find out the impedence of the factory sub and find an aftermarket 8" free air sub with the same impedence and use the factory amp. In all honesty neither will sound as good in the stock location as the factory one will.

Ebay that shiz. ^ is right, neither will sound as good as the stock JBL. I am still not sure how an aftermarket sub will cause a fire hazard?????

^^correct answer . if it's the wrong impedance the amp can over heat and catch fire... highly unlikely but possible.

more likely it wil just burn out
