I had an apartment lined up for the fall, but it fell through so I had to go for university housing. I didn't get my application in until late June, so the odds were not in my favor to begin with.

I got an email today from housing that said I was put on a 240 person waiting list. I have a lot of questions, but mainly, I just want to know what my odds of getting a room are. What happens if I don't? They can't just be like, "Well, we don't have enough rooms, you can't go to school this year," can they? I'm just a little freaked out at the moment, so maybe I will get some more specific, coherent questions as this thread goes along. If anyone worked for housing, or has been through the waitlist procedure, please share your thoughts and experiences.

The university is not required to provide you with housing. NCSU housing will do whatever they can(of course they want to have all the rooms filled -$), but in the end there are only so many dormrooms.

i was standing in line at the cashier's office friday afternoon and this asian guy who was obviously up there with his son for freshman orientation was complaining about the price of housing. he was like "you charge $XXXX for one semester? this too much! it cheaper for son to live off campus. he have own room much bigger. here he have small room with other person. this too much!"

it was hard not to crack up

I got a place you can stay in starting in early August. I just moved out of a room in my parents' apartment they own near campus. All it requires is a credit check. You get an individual lease so if the other guy bails (which he won't) you aren't up shit creek. Rent's $350/mo, utilities will run about $80-90/mo, and the lease is a 6mo lease through January 31st.

You're better off not doing some dumb shit with the university and living off campus. This place is right next to centennial, on the wolfline, and it's a fairly direct walk to campus (~20-30 minute walk depending on how fast you walk).

And even if you aren't interested in mine, become interested in somebody else's. Living on campus is dumb and there's always people like me looking for last minute renters. PM me if you're interested and I'll get you my parents' contact info.

Oh yeah, it's a 2br/2ba garden style townhome (i.e. it's on one floor). 1200 sq ft. The guy who'd be your roommate brews beer and has the place ridiculously clean right now. Nice guy as well, not a crazy socially retarded nerd.

^^^ I know it's a renter's market. I'm just advertising wherever because I can. I'm agreeing with you that there's a crap ton of apartments/renters out there that need one person for one bedroom at a reasonable monthly rate (near campus).

The 240 person waiting list is going to be tough within 3 weeks. Most folks aren't going to jump ship this late into the game without facing some penalties. My advice would be to start hunting for an apartment complex. Unless you have excellent credit at age 19 (possibly but unlikely), you will likely need your parents to co-sign on any apartment leases. You can put in a fresh application, or, try craigslist/TWW classifieds looking for rooms to rent.

As has been mentioned, it is cheaper off-campus, despite NCSU propaganda stating otherwise. However, you do miss out on some of the "college life" experience by not being on campus for another year. If this is your second year of college, I would recommend staying on campus if at all possible. (Note, the terms freshman/sophomore/junior/senior don't apply here as those are simply reflections of credit hours, not necessarily time spent on campus). You mentioned a "room" ... are you applying for a specific dorm or Wolf Village to live in?

Boylan Company owns an apartment on Gorman Street. It's a fair distance from campus (like right in between campus and the food lion on avent ferry) but a wolfline bus comes right by the place, so you can ride to class if you prefer.

Three room apartments, each room has its own bathroom, there's a full kitchen with a dishwasher, washer and dryer, etc. Rent is 335 plus utilities (you can get the utilities in a package, but it's retarded don't do it).

The office to learn about the apartment is on S Boylan St (near downtown) and the lady's name you need to talk to is Carla. She is the best, a fantastic lady.

I live there, and aside from the usual assholes you can't escape, it's a pretty good place.

I would say look for a place off campus like everyone else;

HOWEVER, if you want to live on campus now, typically university housing works through their waiting list in the first week of the semester. Often times they put overflow residents into lounges until everyone has gotten a new room. There is no guarantee of which building or which roommate you end up with.
