If any of you guys have been following the status of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter that was launched last month, NASA just released some pictures that it recently took of the Moon's surface. If you look close enough, you can see the Apollo lunar modules still there. Pretty awesome.

Those were just the images taken as the LRO reached orbit. Once it reaches it's optimal orbit which will be closer to the surface, it should be able to take some pictures with a lot higher resolution.

^^ the originals were beamed to and recorded in Australia first, before being transmitted to the US. And they probably had thousands of reels that took up huge storerooms, mixed in with thousands of reels of other types of data. It's hard to believe, but not totally out of the realm of possibility that the reels were just mixed up or were mislabeled or something.

ITT I disprove theories that suggest the Moon landing was a hoax.

As Whoopi pointed out:

- Who filmed Armstrong and Aldrin getting out of the capsule and moving around?
The camera that recorded the first steps was mounted to the outside of the capsule. It was pointed directly at the ladder for the sole purpose of catching the first steps. Since it was one of the most important achievements in history, NASA figured it might be cool to get it on film. Other shots were set up by mounting cameras to tripods/other equipment. Not too hard to figure that one out, Whoopi.

- Why was the flag "rippling"?
Aside from a regular flagpole holding it up, it had one across the top to keep it from slouching down so that it always remained upright. Even slightly nudging the flagpole would cause the flag to sway back and forth. In the Earth's atmosphere, this would damp out pretty quickly. The moon has no atmosphere though, so it acted almost like a pendulum, damping out only under the friction of the flag against the pole.
