My dog has a spot on his tail that he's been chewing, and it looks like it's bleeding and has puss around it. He doesn't have fleas or ticks, and it sounds like a hot spot (based on googling) (links to bigger pics)I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow but I was hoping someone could help me figure out what it is tonight. Thanks TWW ]

it looks a lot like the hot spots our dog gets. he has dry skin and he gets them in the summer. all that we have been told is to put that hot spot stuff on them and try to keep them clean... i am thinking of getting him one of those neck cone deals so they will have time to heal. let me know what your vet says! i am not very satisfied with the answer we got because it really hasn't fixed the problem at all

my dog gets the same thing every summer and its because she's allergic to fleas. Even 1 little flea can cause the irritation and dogs dont know when to quit itching.I know you go to the dog park.... what kind of flea medicine do you use?actually, that might be a spider bite[Edited on July 15, 2009 at 10:22 AM. He goes to the dog park but I use Advantix flea stuff and haven't seen any fleas, ticks or bugs on him. It's really obvious when he has fleas because his hair is so light.I hope it's not a spider bite ]

Looks like a hot spot. The vet will probably clip and clean the wound and send you home with some antibiotics.

Oatmeal baths, neosporin, dog cone. No need for a vet unless it gets drastically worse.

Turns out that it's an infection from either a sting or a bite by something and he had a reaction to it. I've got 2 antibiotics and some wipes to clean him up with, and scheduled an appointment in 2 weeks for a follow up. They said that it could be ringworm as well as the other stuff, but aren't sure yet. ]
