Cooba diving!

I'm a SCUBA diver. Love diving and have recently gotten into freediving/ spearfishing. You would be suprised the number of wrecks in NC you can dive with no tanks. I know of at least 8 wrecks in the Wilmington area that I can freedive on down to 40'. You can also load up with fish by spearfishing as opposed to fishing with a pole.[Edited on July 14, 2009 at 1:12 PM. Reason : pics]

I have a few more shots I'll post -- these were taken in the cavern of the Peacock Springs cave system in Florida. Note: overhead diving without proper training will most likely be hazardous to your health.A buddy of mine in the cavern zone after our cave dive:Taken far back in the cavern zone, not quite to the cave zone:[Edited on July 14, 2009 at 1:26 PM. 7/29/2009 3:54:55 PM

7/29/2009 3:55:59 PM
^^Awesome. What's the focus of your dives?
7/29/2009 3:58:39 PM
vertebrate/invertebrate sampling to determine species richness, size distribution, and reef restoration impact of restored relic oyster reefs.Species of interest include xanthid and portunid crabs (ex, stone crabs and blue crabs, respectively), seabass, sheepshead, gray snapper, bluefish, mackerel, blah blah blahwe will also excavate oysters to determine size distribution. The whole idea is to use a BACI (before-after-control-impact) design to estimate the effect of restoration on relic oyster reefs on local marine communities.
7/30/2009 9:06:43 AM
i can already tell you those oyster shell piles work. we catch trout on top of them all the time.

Went diving on Cade's Reef, and an old French steam ship wreck in Antigua back in June. Saw big sea turtles, barracuda, several rays, and other common stuff. Pictures sucked though as we don't have a dive camera and we were using an underwater disposable camera.

haven't in a while but im certified and what nots
8/2/2009 8:34:36 PM
^^ we're actually looking at that also. NC Sea Grant is a partner on the project and will be conducting both dockside and on-the-water surveys to determine where fishermen are coming from, what they are targeting, and their awareness of the artificial reef projects in Pamlico Sound
