Well I assumed that since I had a pretty nice tan going on already that I could spend the day out on the boat with SPF-6

Yeah, you know what happens when you assume

Yeah I know. I should have known better, and I typically do. So I deserve this agony.

This is the first sunburn I have had in years.

Does anyone else get headaches with sunburn?

Headaches and dizziness definitely with sun poisening. Hydrate and make sure you aloe a ton. Use the solarcane mentioned above. Works awesome and you don't have to touch the skin.

And yes, I'm present too.

Next time you're burnt, take a papertowel or 3 and soak them in white vinegar, and gently rub the area you're sunburned. Let the vinegar kinda soak into your body. It will take the heat right out. It's an old home remedy that always worked when I was a kid. Of course you smell like vinegar for a day, but it's better than 3 or 4 days of agony.

And I totally got burnt Friday afternoon at the pool. Just my shoulders. Of course I was the one who insisted a few hours wouldn't hurt nobody, so I'm the only one to blame.

back when i had bacne real bad they wanted to try this antibiotic that went to your skin before they just put me on accutane. i didn't read the warnings that come with the medicine and warn you to stay out of the sun. i went rock fishing up in jamesville in march and didn't worry about sunscreen because i was in jeans and a t-shirt.

my neck got blistered and i couldn't turn my head for 2 days. it seriously blistered up in these watery bump things that would burst when you touched them. it sucked. my entire face, my ears, and my forearms were the same way

i was pitiful

i sat on the couch for 2 days straight. couldn't even lean back because the couch back would touch my neck.

and then, as it started to heal, came the itching.

i have only realized recently that there is sun screen above spf 50, and i can't imagine how much more it would be beneficial than spf 50.

diminishing returns have to exist, yes? 100 isn't 2x as good as 50, is it?

it has also recently come to my attention that you must wait 30 minutes before applying sun screen and that reapplication every 2 - 3 hours is necessary for it to remain effective.

basically the 25 years of my life up to now were worthless in regards to sun screen application.

^ we were actually talking about that on the boat yesterday. I don't think it gets much more beneficial above 30, and definitely not above 50

so what's the general consensus about the spray-on versus the lotion? i much prefer the spray-on cuz that way your hands don't get all icky. is it just as effective?

Haha, yeah if you don't actually rub in the spray stuff you probably end up with a bunch of pale spots and burned spots.

not really, the spray tends to cover all areas. i would think with the lotion you're more likely to have spots cuz you might miss a spot

Maybe I'm thinking of different spray?

What is this spray you use called my son?

The spray I've used still ends up pretty much like lotion once it hits the skin son, so I end up having to rub it in anyway.

Quote :
"In reality, an SPF of 15 filters out about 93 percent of the UVB rays; SPF 30 filters about 97 percent of UVB rays."

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sunscreen/SN00044

if 30 filters out 97% of the sun's rays, I would say that anything higher than 50 would pretty much be a waste.

and furthermore:

Quote :
"anywhere from 30 to 100+ SPF only block about 97 percent. Translation? Even a small jump in price might not be worth it, as you’re not adding a big sun-blocking benefit when opting for a high SPF."

Isn't it key to look for "full spectrum" sunblock that takes care of the UVA and UVB rays?

I mean I just get darker and darker, but I still try to apply the stuff.

I do peel though, so I guess I have gotten a sunburn and just didn't feel the pain.

I can stay out all day without burning once I have a base tan, but my mom and my neighbor at Lake Gaston have both had Melanoma and that's some nasty stuff. It's one of the fastest spreading cancers and it can eat up your organs in no-time once it gets in your bloodstream. With a family history of it and several bad sunburns earlier in life I don't really mess around with sun exposure much now.

I hate the Coppertone continuous spray. After a couple coats that stuff will start to cake up. You can rub it off and it feels nasty.

Banana Boat pump spray goes on pretty good and doesn't leave any nasty residue like the Coppertone stuff. I like it.

This stuff is good. I have SPF100 and SPF55. It's about $11 for 3 ounces (versus $7.50 for 8 ounces of Coppertone) so I just use it on my face and ears. I think the ears are the most common spot for skin cancer to appear, so don't forget to cover them.

I use Coppertone Sport SPF50 on my arms and legs and I wear a rash guard to cover my chest, back, and shoulders all day. I still have a really good tan just from the little bit of exposure I get, but I'm not as dark as I have been in previous years.

^^^sunblock will definitely slow down the rate at which you get tanned. if you use that spf 50+ stuff, you would go all summer and only be marginally dark.

it's not like sunblock lets through the sun that only tans you and only blocks out the part that burns you or something

[Edited on July 7, 2009 at 11:21 AM. Reason : .l]

[Edited on July 7, 2009 at 11:23 AM. Reason : ^yeah, the coppertone cont spray sucks if you're getting in the water. i just use it fishing.]
