Excerpt from new Edmunds article;

"Even after jumping out of a car as charismatic as the Aston or as beautifully resolved as the Audi, the 911 GT3 just feels on another level. And it comes down to this. The Porsche 911 GT3 feels more honed to the sharp edge of driving performance than any other car in this test. There just isn't one iota of slack in it, so you are never, ever guessing or making allowances for the car. You can literally drive as hard as you want and the harder you go, the more rewarding it is. More throttle, less lock, 4th gear — it all happens instantly. You can brake so fiercely that it feels like running into a brick wall, or throw the nose into a fast corner so hard that you wince and hold your breath, and yet you'll always find the car taut underneath you, telling you calmly and with clarity about the forces working on the tires, chassis and drivetrain. And because it never dithers, you gain confidence and find yourself being the best that you can be, and that is addictively intoxicating."

"We tried to talk ourselves out of choosing the 2009 Porsche 911 GT3. Maybe the latest GT3 is too fast, too grippy and too brutal. Maybe Porsche should have built a car with the same power as the previous GT3, only with less weight. But every time you come back from a drive in the GT3, you find yourself smiling and shaking your head. You can't deny the Porsche its victory; it is wonderful."

Man, I wish I could afford one...

So basically it's like every other Porsche review by a major rag? Several pages of drooling without any negatives whatsoever? At least top gear talks about how boring they are

I used to lust after a 911 Turbo, but with the advent of the 997 I've been GT3 all the way. Plus I hear its a great DD thanks to the adjustable suspension.

^^haha yeah i love how top gear calls the 911 a 'bug'

Thats another reason why i love top gear reviews because they rag on every car...and when one comes along that they have nothing negative to say about it...you know its just that awesome.

Thats because Top Gear is all about snarky comments and cultural references. For the sake of appearing insightful, elightened or clever, they rag on cars that are genuinely awesome and gush about cars that are genuinely crap. They don't actually reveiw the cars; the in-car script is written before they even see the car.

^^Actually they do review the cars, just not ON the show. Their reviews on the website are pretty damn good. And frankly, their "snarky" comments on the show are usually pretty spot on.

Even on Top Gear, Porsche is the benchmark (don't get me wrong, the GT3 is a fucking incredible vehicle), but they are one of the few media outlets to ever point out that there is MORE to a vehicle than it's technical perfection.

Technically superior? It's got the engine in the wrong place, and it's down on power compared to all the cars it's faster than around a track. Oh my, but the way they feel, and the way they make you feel... euphoric.

I've never been a fan of the turbo (AWD +extra weight = bad). I'd say I became a fan of 911s in general from two types of them;
73 RS replicas with more power/tire, etc.
and the 996 GT3. 997 carries on what was good about the 996 IMO.

I wonder about the feasibility of doing euro delivery on a GT3 and flipping it...

^^^ I've seen video's of people flipping their 996s on the Nürburgring... Literally... So yeah, it's doable I'm sure.

I do not have a specific buyer no, but I've seen people flip the 996 GT3 and the MK1 997 GT3, so I figured it could possibly be worth a shot. To me the appeal wouldn't be the possibility of making $10k on it (though I do think that's real), it's more driving one for a couple of thousand miles on the Nurburgring, Spa, and in general enjoying it in Germany without paying for it. Euro delivery adds around $5k (whereas it's a discount on a BMW and I imagine Volvo, et al. - go Porsche ), but covers insurance/hotel, airfare, etc.

However, it appears that all the allocations are out through 2010, the earliest would be mid 2011 delivery. That would mean it'd be significantly harder to sell at a profit, if at all possible. It was a good fantasy, but I don't think it's feasible.

So I'm going to go ahead and give this pipe dream a rest. Sweet cars though, and I'll try to snatch a ride in one on track as soon as I find somebody with one that can drive...

Good idea. You'll get your chance. Doesn't have to be done today.
