I'm going back to the hospital for more surgery on my arm. Those damn bony prominences never seem to go away. I found a great doctor in San Francisco who thinks he can solve my problem for good, although it will likely result in me losing half my elbow Worst case, depending on what he sees when he slices me open, I'll come out having 1.25 arms instead of 1.5 Flying out tomorrow AM and surgery is first thing on Monday.

The surgery went well. They removed a lot more of my arm than they thought they would, about half way between my elbow and shoulder. My arm barely sticks out of a tshirt now I wish I could have kept my elbow but at least I won't have any more problems with pain. I get to leave the hospital this afternoon so I'm ready to get back to my parents house and relax for the next couple of weeks.

^^for realhope you have a speedy recovery
6/18/2009 11:16:39 AM
Omar, I haven't really thought about things that would be more difficult but going on what slave said doing pushups with no support on my left side will make it harder until I learn how do do them with one arm. When I had my elbow I could put a lot of weight on it. Now my arm will probably not be able to ever support a lot of weight on the end.I'll probably have to put a bottle under my armpit to open it whereas before I could grip it with my elbow and pin it against my body. It's little things mostly, but with anything I'll be able to adapt. The past 10 years have been proof of that.

Two words - Bionic arm. Or something like a Borg arm. That would be sweet.
6/18/2009 11:31:52 AM
I actually have two arms at home. One is the electric battery powered one with a real looking hand on it that opens and closes. The other is mechanically powered that has a hook on it. That one has removable attachments so I can do other things like hold on to a dumbell. I never use them because they are uncomfortable, hot, sweaty, and I feel that they are in the way. Now that my arm has changed those two prosthetics are worthless to me and I would have to have new ones made. Insurance will pay for it so I may go ahead and let them buy me a new one. The new ones though will be more difficult to use since I would have to control the elbow and wrist/hand separately.

Sorry to hear you had to get another surgery but glad to hear it went well and they think they solved your problem. How are you recovering?<3
6/18/2009 11:52:48 AM
Recovery is going well. They took the drainage tube out last night. The sutures look good with no signs of infection. The pain is still pretty bad and I'm on some strong pain medications. But it's getting better and after about five days the pain should be very manageable. At least that's how it was with my other three million arm surgeries.
