Is there a better app out there rather than Prt Scr, Ctrl-v into paint, select the area I want, cut paste, save.I think I had a firefox plugin that you could do this with webpages, but I'm wanting to do it within windows itself. I have about 20 different spice graphs I need to save into .jpg format and the tool I am using (AvanWaves) can only print them out.EditFigures three seconds after I post this I see holding alt will get just the active window. This will probably be suitable enough.[Edited on June 11, 2009 at 9:46 PM. Reason : .]

i have used pixclip before as it avoids me having to crop anythingbut i see you have found your answer

http://www.realmacsoftware.com/littlesnapper/oh, wait..... some people still use Windows
6/11/2009 9:59:12 PM
This AvanWaves doesn't run on a mac. I know it's hard to believe, but software that actually gets real shit done, as opposed to frou frou shit like video editing, likes to live on Windoze.

if you're on vista or 7 it comes with a snipping tool to select part of the screen. But like you found out alt+print screen handles 90% of use cases.

my friend uses gadwin. pretty good for quick cutting of a specific area. save to clipboard of file with a couple keystrokes.
6/11/2009 11:30:09 PM
^^ i'm busting his balls. he knows that
6/11/2009 11:36:57 PM
Seriously, use the snipping tool in Vista/Win7. You can snip by window, and save to file right there.
6/12/2009 12:00:52 AM
grab in Mac OS X.
6/12/2009 12:06:50 AM
second for gadwin...simple, free, not crapware: http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/if you want to use something in firefox, screengrab: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1146

YOU DONT NEED TO DOWNLOAD ANYTHING. WINDOWS HAS A GREAT SCREEN SNIPPING TOOL BUILT IN.

Vista or 7. which most people don't use

why would a web browser need a screen grab tool?
6/12/2009 7:45:21 PM
why would you EVER need a screen grab tool? primarily, grabbing the full page, rather than just the visible portion...as part of that, having the option of capturing a particular frame instead of the whole visible portioni use it to generate how-to documents with screenshots for web applications that i write
6/12/2009 8:10:07 PM
yea but the screen grab tool in vista/7 can do that plus grab other stuff so whats the point?
6/12/2009 10:23:42 PM
win7 was a piece of horseshit for me during the week i tried it (for reasons i documented in the win7 thread), so i can't speak to that oneas for vista, when i hit "print screen", i get a zoom window in the top right part of the screen and a crosshair selection tool...i do not get the automatic "save" options of "complete page/frame", "visible portion", "selection", and "window"already screen grab is more usable than the vista one...i'm not saying those aren't options on the vista tool, but it can't be nearly as intuitive if it's not available upon the initial keypressas for gadwin, it gives me similar options when i use the print screen key...again, the vista tool doesn't do that (at least not intuitively)*shrug*...i prefer the functionality of well-developed free software to the relative uselessness of built-in tools (although, perhaps i'm missing something...what does the vista/win7 tool do that these don't? and can it be set to be a one-click thing instead of navigating a series of menus?)[Edited on June 12, 2009 at 10:34 PM. SnagIt is by far the best capture app.
6/12/2009 11:24:56 PM
^ snagit is pretty awesome...but unless you steal it (or nabbed the free offer a few weeks back), it costs $monies

^ it doesn't have to compute...it's Noen telling us how awesome microsoft is, which is the same message that comprises 80% of everything he posts in tech talk (15% is him preaching the evils of torrents, and the remaining 5% is him contributing genuinely insightful and worth reading)the only fact in his world is this: if you don't like a microsoft product you are inexcusably wrong

do you have difficulty reading more than a few words at a time? do conversations elude you? do you have difficulty following the course of a discussion? since you're apparently retarded, let me take that single quote you used and put it into context so that your overtaxed brain might come to a realization you can't manage on your own:

You know, I'm not a huge Neon fan because I think he is pompous as fuck and will never admit when he has been destroyed in an argument, but his MS fanboism isn't nearly as overblown as you're claiming, ESPECIALLY considering he actually works there. The rest of the points you are making about him not reading but sticking to an argument is classic Neon, but I can't get on board with the MS hate.
6/14/2009 3:40:47 PM
quagmire02, just drop the MS fanboy argument
6/14/2009 9:27:20 PM
you're right, i'm sorry...the included vista/win7 screen capture apps do EVERYTHING anyone could EVER hope for...i don't know what i was thinking, suggesting otherwise [/thread]

^ exactly...it works great for MOST people...which is why, when i suggested the two additional tools and was asked why you would use them over the built-in ones, i gave examples of how microsoft's tools aren't up to snuff, which then offended certain people...this thread has gone like this:1.) OP makes a thread called "best prt scr capture app"2.) OP asked for a "better app" than windows print screen tool, which implies that he's tried itright here, microsoft's included tools get tossed out as they don't apply...they are hardly the "best" and there are DEFINITELY "better" tools out there that are more functional, for free3.) before the first reply, OP edits post and says he's found that the included tool will "probably be suitable enough"4.) people make suggestions, including references to third-party apps and windows built-in tool5.) quagmire02 mentions gadwin and screengrab6.) Noen RESPONDS IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE HE'S FUCKING PISSED THAT SOMEONE SUGGESTED ANYTHING BUT A MICROSOFT PRODUCT...it's what he does and he does it well7.) someone asks quagmire02 how the suggested tools are better than the windows one8.) quagmire02 points out that microsoft's tool is extremely basic and that additional free tools offer more flexibility and options at no cost9.) Noen says vista/win7 does exactly what the OP wants (true) but completely ignores the title of the thread referencing the "best" print screen capture app (which the vista/win7 tool is far from)...he also continually references a paid-for version of an application that wasn't even mentioned because he's a stupid son of a whore who can't focus on anything long enough to make sure he has a fuck's clue what he's talking about10.) quagmire02 calls Noen a microsoft fanboy a lot of times and constantly mentions the fact that Noen struggles with reading comprehension11.) ...12.) ...13.) quagmire02 makes list at work because he's bored[Edited on June 15, 2009 at 10:49 AM. 6/15/2009 11:08:30 AM
^ i encourage you to find evidence of me talking, in tech talk, about things i know nothing about...i think it's kind of silly for you to imply that i am frequently FACTUALLY wrong when you won't be able to find evidence of it not a single thing in this thread that i've said actually WRONG...the apps i offered up as alternatives are both free and do more than the basic microsoft tools...you might not like the fact that i pick on Noen's microsoft fanboy disorder or the fact that he can't actually read and i'm cool with that...i can understand feeling protective of the retarded
6/15/2009 11:20:03 AM
Dude, give up. It isn't worth it.
6/15/2009 11:21:26 AM
i know...it doesn't matter that Ernie has taken a turn for the worse and is now talking out of his ass (unless you've found some proof there, Ernieboy?)...Noen will continue to suck gates' cock and i will continue to use functional tools made for those of us who like to USE their computers and applications to their full potential

Print screen app threads are serious fuckin' business, huh?
