Adam -adam8778 - had a wreck yesterday evening ~6pm whilst riding the DRZ400SM on NC8. I dont know the entire story, but a vehicle pulled out in front of him, and he crashed into it. Broke left femur, left radius, and some bone in left wrist. cast and plate to left radius, lots of work done to left hand/wrist, got a big rod put in left femur. Surgery lasted 8 hours, and last I have heard he is doing well.

Needless to say I know who's going to increase their TWW Lurkage about 1000%

visited adam last night. He's doing well, and will start physical therapy today. They should have him walking around and putting some weight on his left leg.

I'll let adam chime in on this one. AFAIK, the driver who pulled out in front of him.

just wanted to say this is probably the 5th motorcycle wreck i've heard about in probably 2 weeks.

just because it looks totally rad and bitchin doesn't necessarily mean you ought to be on one.

^ Get that insurance money...all you can get. Pain and suffering is the worst to endure and should be compensated with alot of $texas.

wheels of justice have began

her insurance willl obviously be paying for the bike and all medical bills. have already said they will reimburse lost wages and there will be some kind of settlement for pain and suffering, which has been consierable

damn, i wish you the best man. unfortunately i know all to well what you're going through. if you want/need any advice on anything, chances are i can probably give you an informed answer. as you'll find out, the medical bills and insurance stuff is nearly as big of a hassle as the injury/recovery.

unless you have good medical coverage and underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage on you auto policy, there's a chance the settlement could be disappointing. it depends on how good the at fault driver's policy is. lots of people only carry the state minimum, which isn't much in the scheme of things. bodily injury is only 30k iirc, and an emergency room visit, single surgery, followed with a few days in the hospital can easily run that much.

i would highly recommend hiring a lawyer, or at least consulting with one. personal injury cases are VERY tricky, and large sums of money are at risk. nc laws are not favorable to victims at all. legislation that's been put in place to curb fraud is frequently abused by insurance companies to deny legitimate claims. for example, even if someone is found to be at fault in an accident by law enforcement and any witnesses, it's entirely possible their insurance could have a strong case against paying out a dime to the other party. it's called contributory negligence, and the law allows for an extremely broad definition.

oh, and screw the pt idiots, don't let them force you to do anything you're not up for. i made the mistake of letting them drag me out of bed a few days after my accident to start using crutches. i told the retards that something wasn't right, and i was having severe pain in my right leg and left arm. they passed it off as "just being sore". turned out they were both broken too.

Agreed.
What are good limits to set with your own policy?

personally, i now carry the maximum of umi that i can. i think it's 1mil bodily injury. property damage is like 100k? i'd have to look at my bill to be sure, but it's very cheap to add in comparison to the huge difference in coverage. something like $30 every 6 months. most agents/companies don't push it as something to add since it has potential to really damage their wallet in a payout vs. what they collect on the policy charges.

while it was far from the amount i'm covered for now, i was very fortunate to have had the umi that i did at the time of my accident. i would have been screwed without it. i slaughtered the limits of the guy's policy that hit me.

funny tidbit:

I told adam in the hospital: "I bet I know the first thing you thought of after the crash"

Adam: "yup, now I know what BBR felt like."

the amount your premium goes up for umi coverage is negligible. I carry 1mil/1mil/3mil

Few things to remember

If the guy only has 30k insurance (miniumum) and you have 30k umi you dont get 60k total coverage.

Its whichever is greater.

Also, if you get a settlement its better, because then your insurance covers your medical, and all possible future medicals.

If you go to court and win 30k now, but then yoru leg is screwed for forever, your insurance dosnt have to cover those injuries.

I would talk to a lawyer, at least get the free consultation. remember that they will take 30% of what they will do if you choose to go with them.

Try to find out the other guys coverage limits.

Probably not quite. Wouldn't wish the kind of condition BBR was in onto anyone. I ran into a few things on a bike myself, one of them being a side of a full size Silverado, and I seen dozens of people wreck, including a few wolfwebbers, but BBR wreck was something i hope i will never see again outside of a special effects action movie sequence. Still, broken bones = no good. Have fun with that morpheine button while if they gave you one
