So I have an old turntable (Garrard, probably from the 70's, thrift store find) that I want to hook up to my modern receiver (Onkyo TX-SR501). However, the turntable has a grounding wire, and there isn't a ground screw (that I can see, anyway) on the receiver. Can I ground it to one of the case screws, since it's a metal case? Do I need to ground it to an unpainted section of frame? Something else entirely? Thanks....

It wouldn't hurt to just try it. Also you'll probably need a receiver with a "phono" input or an external pre-amp for it to sound right.

I'll need to find out if it has an internal preamp or not. Even if not, though, it will produce enough sound to test it, right? Paid like 10 bucks for it, but all I could verify at the store was that it did indeed turn, and that the controls seem to work. Once I get it hooked up I want to verify that the circuitry is in working order before doing things like replacing the needle/buying a pre-amp if necessary. From what I've heard from older folks, Garrard was a pretty decent brand back in the day, so I'm hoping I can get it to work.

It'll work well enough to test without the pre-amp.

If it works, you should get a pre-amp ASAP.
