Could there be any other reason besides the fan?

How old is it? Is it a toshiba? Try and pay attention to what you're doing with it when it shuts off. My guess is its just overheating, so I wouldn't be suprised if you have it sitting in your lap or on a plush surface like a couch or bed. And check what ^ said.

until you can rule out the battery (try running it plugged in for a while), you have to assume that's what it is.

Its an hp. it never feels hot nor do i hear the fan running. Darkone might be right, i just had a virus issue which i thought was corrected. (some random antivirus program appeared on my computer after i let my sister use it, and it started acting retarded)

Anywho...how do i check thoroughly for viruses and eliminate them if present? everytime i try to scan with my trend a.v. it shuts off!!

just cuts off like the power was removed. when i try running the antivirus it definately shuts off each time before it finishes running.

Who could diagnose this for me. i am not a pc expert

I have a 6 year old hp laptop that is still going strong, the only real issue I've had with it was it cutting off due to overheating. I'd either:

a) download/install speedfan or similar program to monitor cpu temps and see if its overheating

b) open it up and check for excess dust/blockages. Just because your fan is spinning doesn't mean the hot air is being evacuated

If that is not the problem then I'd probably blame it on the "random antivirus program appeared on my computer after i let my sister use it." My parents got some crap like that on their computer (it was like Antivirus2009 or some shit) and it was practically impossible to remove. I found all kinds of stuff online on how to remove it (have to modify registries and such) but when everything was said and done Symantec would not run (even in safe mode) nor would any kind of anti-spyware software run (it would isntall but not run), but the program seemed gone. I just ended up formatting/reinstalling windows for them.

seems like i might have to reformat also. Unless someone is familiar with the damned virus. I cant even open gmail now. If someone thinks they can help remove the virus and get my laptop back up to speed id be willing to compensate.

yea this virus is terrible. it affects internet use for instance i cant access gmail, log into ebay etc. very specific in what it affects.

If it's the Antivirus2009/AntivirusXP/PersonalAntivirus or any of the other 10 billion variants, a combo of Malwarebytes' Antimalware and hijackthis will take care of it.

^^your links in google may or may not be fuxed too. I know in the process of trying to download stuff like "Malwarebytes' Antimalware and hijackthis" every google link that even mentioned antivirus, spyware, etc would actually link to fake sites (you could still copy/paste the url though, but even then most of those sites were blocked). I ended up downloading malwarebytes and a few others from cnet downloads (wasn't blocked) but like I said before, they would d/l and seem to install, but would not run... even in safe mode... even after I followed all the steps online on how to manually remove/modify registry. Adaware was installed on their computer before they got the virus and it wouldn't run either.

I'd reformat/reinstall windows and be done with it.

yeah, that SpywareProtect 2009, etc shit is annoying but Malwarebytes usually kicks its ass. Download a copy of that on another computer and use a flash drive or something to get it on your laptop. At the end, tell it to Update and then scan it when the update is finished..

^ yeah, when I went to google and tried to search for malwarebytes, it'd say the site was unsafe.
