NC's state capitol was constructed by granite from a rock quarry SE of the city grid proper. (Old N,S,E,W boundary streets) Coincidentally, it must be off Rocky Quarry rd somewhere. It doesn't have a name - or I've just never been able to find one. Is it that little lake/pond there on google maps? Filled in? I know the first NC railroad was laid just to transport stone to Union Square from the quarry site. People used to ride on it for fun since it was the first rail car in NC.

The rejected stones from the state capitol's construction were given to St. Mary's School. From them East Rock and West Rock, as they were called, were constructed in front of their main building, Smedes Hall. They still stand.

Does the quarry still exist? Viable? Think it only had enough quality granite to build one solid masonry building? Interesting.

There's a very good chance it is the pond. When I was living in Vermont there were tons of abandoned granite mines that had long since turned into lakes and ponds that were great for swimming in the summer.
