"WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is calling digital security a top priority, whether it's guarding the computer systems that keep the lights on in a city and direct airliners to the right runway or those protecting customers who pay their bills online.

To oversee an enhanced security system for U.S. computer networks, Obama is creating a "cyber czar" as part of a long-awaited plan stemming from a review he ordered shortly after taking office.

On Friday, Obama is expected to lay out broad goals for dealing with cyber threats while depicting the U.S. as a digital nation that needs to provide the education required to keep pace with technology and attract and retain a cyber-savvy work force. He also is expected to call for a new education campaign to raise public awareness of the challenges and threats related to cyber security."

I realize this is something of a bleed-over from TSB, but I'm interested in the opinions of people whose profession or primary activity deeply involves the internet.

So . . . how do you feel about the concept of a cyber czar and his potential influence on the internet given both the government's stated security issues and the attempts in the past to regulate the internet.

I will keep my politics out of this response

I think it's completely pointless, because it will be some old fart that actually knows nothing about security, and therefore will be a complete waste. This will encourage more people to attempt to "beat the czar" and cause havoc.

i think cyber security is one of the most underestimated threats to this country, but i have doubts that any federal agency is going to be able to have the kind of effect required to make any significant difference. furthermore, if a cyber czar were able to constrain other departments' policies to the effect that it would accomplish those security objectives, i'd worry that the regulatory and bureaucratic burdens associated with properly adhering to those constraints would distract from those departments' real purposes
