For all you dense people out there that can't grasp the difference between you're/your and there/their/they're, this little lesson is for you. Take a moment, read it, absorb it, utilize it. You won't look like a complete dumbass, and it will be at least a little easier to take you seriously.

Your
Possessive of 'you'

You're
Contraction of 'you are'

EXAMPLE:
I saw your cat yesterday.
I know you're going to learn a lot by reading this thread.

There
A location

Their
Possessive of 'them'

They're
Contraction of 'they are'

EXAMPLE
I need to go there tomorrow to get a shirt.
I usually like their music, but I don't like their last album.
They're oblivious to the changing weather conditions.

She told me if I wanted to go to school to be a teacher, she wouldn't help me pay for college.

it's "definitely"

There are a metric shit ton of people on this website that also desperately need to learn the difference between yeah, yea, and yay.

Or I guess continue to look retarded when they don't know the difference.

I don't understand the attempt to rationalize not knowing basic grammar with the "it's not for a grade" argument. You learned it in elementary school. It's not difficult. There is no reason you should not have retained the information. I don't have to do math for a grade anymore ... does that mean I don't have to know how to do multiplication? I learned that in elementary school too ...

kind of like in the spelling bee thread when someone said they wouldnt use spelling for the rest of their lives.

btw, punctuation (e.g. apostrophes), i dont use it here

how do you feel about that?

it's more of a matter of not giving a fuck. even better giving a fuck that it does in fact bother people just makes it that much more entertaining.

it's also about laziness and the amount of effort and brain power i deem to devote towards spelling and grammar on a online forum message board where I rarely if ever proof read.

basically it's not worth the effort to me (usually while doing actual work that i actually get money for) to make sure all my little i's and t's are dotted and crossed just so a few self-righteous nosy people can feel better about reading it.

plus the number of errors i have per post is rather fucking low.

additionally using math correctly usually is in reference to actual money so there is real motivation for not getting it wrong.

I don't particularly care if someone else neglects proper grammar/spelling/whatever in informal situations on the internet (which would not count for, say, work e-mails). I just don't think it speaks well of you. Typos are typos, and they will happen, but there's no reason anyone older than 10 shouldn't know better, and it seems that a lot of people honestly don't.

Except it's not.
I didn't have any english grammar instruction until junior year of high school. It was by my German teacher - so we'd have a proper context in which to understand German grammar.

I did alright learning the rules by being a voracious reader, but that's not a reasonable expectation to apply to everyone.

It takes almost zero effort to get shit right, if you've truly learned it. You're actually not someone who would come to mind when poor grammar is discussed, so you're kinda proving my point

It easily becomes second nature to get shit right. That makes written communication in an academic or professional situation so much easier. I do feel you though - sometimes I just don't feel like capitalizing my Is (I do it so as not to get out of the habit of always having it right - it saves me time on proofing when every second counts)
--
I usually don't care if people fuck up their grammar. Mostly because just like cheating on tests, the only person they are shortchanging is themselves. If you don't care that you come across as an idiot, why should I? You're just making life after (and sometimes during) easier to everyone who can bother to half-ass their written communication. I do tend to look down somewhat on folks who have the capacity to get a handle on grammar, but choose not to. They're pretty much asking for it, by telling to world "I know I have this shortcoming that's easy to fix, but I don't care." That's not exactly a mature mentality

But I do care when it crosses into hypocrisy: when someone who can't get your/you're and they're/there/their straight sees fit to lay into someone else for laziness, intelligence, or level of "care" (in relation to the internet), then their poor grammar becomes a relevant issue. Stones in glass houses and such.
