So I am getting a puppy sometime soon and am trying to decide on a name. Here are my ideas:Boy:GambitPorkchopLokiCarnage(Possibly Banshee if it's loud)Girl:JubilleCallistoBrown Sugar (or some other food name that matches the dog)SheraWhich would you choose? Or does anyone else have any ideas? I'm open to suggestions! Ps, yes I realize most of these names are comic book character names.

The Monks of New Skete say the best dog names are 2 syllables that end in a long vowel or R sound. Anything longer than 2 is too much. 1 syllable words are supposed to be commands. From those lists, Loki and Banshee are good boy names. Sugar or Shera are good girl names. My dog's name is Radar

You should wait until you meet the puppy before you decide on a name and let them inspire you. I just did a rescue- we were planning on naming the pup Thor, but he ended up being so NOT a Thor. Hes Charlie now, and I would have never guessed it before he "told" us.
5/4/2009 10:02:54 PM
I agree with the two syllable idea. My dog's name is Kobe.
5/4/2009 10:06:42 PM
^^So true. First get a sense of your puppy and then give him/her a name that fits his/her personality. You can name a cat anything really, but dogs are little people. My dogs are Oreo and Bobbi.[Edited on May 4, 2009 at 10:10 PM. Reason : -]
5/4/2009 10:10:15 PM
^^ haha, mine is named Lebron.
5/4/2009 10:38:58 PM
third for waiting to meet the dog before you name it
5/4/2009 10:40:32 PM
^^ also a great way to name them is to name them after something that truely interests you or you like....if i could rename mine i would have a watson and crick. totallyi still love my carter and penelope [Edited on May 4, 2009 at 10:42 PM. Reason : gjh]

Oh yeah, I'm def going to wait until I meet the dog to truly decide but I am leaning towards Gambit because I feel it would be very fitting for a pit mix... Although if the pup is a total pushover, I don't think that name would work out I've seen a lot of high energy pits though, which is why I like that name (nerd alert..)I like the 2 syllable idea, and the 1 syllable thing is a good point.Any other name suggestions for personalities?[Edited on May 4, 2009 at 11:05 PM. I named my 9 month old dane Butler, but he now responds just as well to dickhead, stinky, and booger.
5/4/2009 11:21:53 PM
^ hahaha... what about shithead?
5/4/2009 11:24:34 PM
my neighbors have kids so when we're outdoors i keep it pretty tamebut yeah, the profanity laced ones come out inside. especially at 7am.
5/4/2009 11:42:45 PM
alright...time to start the "how long before this puppy is on TWW for adoption" gamei'd say less than 6 months
5/4/2009 11:43:42 PM
i'm fostering a year old dog you can adopt instead. he's house trained and already has a 2 syllable name.

5/5/2009 12:25:29 AM
Nah, this guyI didn't know you were a X-Men fan
5/5/2009 12:33:41 AM
I agree with the two syllable idea. My dog's name is Juno.
5/5/2009 12:38:54 AM
Kimbo Slice

I like "Loki" for a girl or a boy name. When I was an undergrad, I took the equine management course and helped "Foal" out the babies. The theme that year was gods and goddesses... My colt's name was "Thor" and his best friend was named "Loki" I loved that name ever sinceMy dogs' names are Jaeda and Jinzo. But I like to call Jaeda "Monster" sometimes and Jinzo is called "Big red dog" as their nicknames LOLI was thinking lastnight that Guido might be a badass boy dog name... I forgot where I heard that...

LOL my ex and I got a puppy and named him Magneto called him "Neto" for short LOLWhat kind of puppy are you planning to get? I have two mutts and they both are the best of many breeds I could talk about dogs forever! I love dogs [Edited on May 5, 2009 at 8:46 AM. Reason : asdf]
5/5/2009 8:42:53 AM
don't give a name that matches it's looks. i hate that crap. there's so many black & white dogs named oreo and choc labs named hershey. be creative!!i agree with letting the dog inspire its own name. it's a good idea to have some ideas before you get him but don't settle on one until he's yours.my dogs are mia (she came w/ the name, but i liked it okay) and suki. my brother's dogs are bo and charlie [murphy] (they're 4 & 5 years old, named that before the president got his dog). my mom's is chelsea. not so wild about that one.[Edited on May 5, 2009 at 8:45 AM. I think using names that aren't very common is better too. I think "Luna" is also a good girl name...I would have named "Jaeda" that had I not come up with her current name. I'll keep thinking
5/5/2009 8:50:14 AM
Jack Bauer I once met a whippet named Devo; thought it was pretty clever.
5/5/2009 8:55:56 AM
hahahahaha that's pretty good
5/5/2009 9:12:36 AM
^^^ Oooo I like Luna... and I'm looking at a pit bull mix, hopefully he's still at the shelter when I go today! He's brindle and adorable but I want to make sure he's got a good personality. He's about 2 months old.^^ I like that Devo name, very clever [Edited on May 5, 2009 at 9:20 AM. Reason : .]
5/5/2009 9:19:46 AM
I wanted my girlfriend to name her dog Chester, but she went with Gilbert
5/5/2009 9:21:27 AM
My dog Oreo was a rescue pup and was given that name years before we saved him. We decided to keep that name since he was so used to it. Bobbi was named by me, after the famous scottish Greyfriars Bobby. He looks and acts just like him.[Edited on May 5, 2009 at 9:37 AM. Reason : -]
5/5/2009 9:36:42 AM
My pups name is Dante.
5/5/2009 10:12:45 AM
Wait until you get it and go by its character.
5/5/2009 12:28:34 PM
my pet's names - maybe you'll find inspiration from the listDogs - Bailey, Grace & TysonOthers (my classroom animals) many of which were named by students:Duke, Daisy, Stewie, Booger, Jellybean, Taz, Salem, Winnie, Ceasar, Aspen, Charlotte, Savannah, Lily, Teddy, Clover, Cadbury, Moose, Butters, Mocha, Apricot, Nelly, Alvin, Simon, Jack, Stitch, Nemo, Matches, Rocky, Lucy, Rocky, Sydney, Bindi, Ace, Maggie, Ruby, Max, Brooks.
5/5/2009 1:04:21 PM
No to RockyYes to RAMBO
5/5/2009 1:12:46 PM
^^And those are actually pretty good names considering students picked them out. I'm assuming they're a bit older. When I was a kid, I'd come up with the most retarded names. I actually named a dog Purple once (which was swiftly changed to Katie by my mom)
5/5/2009 1:18:08 PM
My buddy just got two Jack Russell puppies and named them Randy Savage and Randy WatsonThey learned their names suprisingly quickHe'll say Randy and they both look at him...then he'll say the second part and the other one turns away
5/5/2009 2:05:43 PM
My pet's name is Penny.
5/5/2009 2:16:53 PM
^^ That's pretty funny I like a lot of the names listed above... And, to whoever said it, of course I'm going to meet the pup before deciding on a name. Like I said, can't really use a name like Gambit for a sluggish doggy.I'm mainly just looking for different and interesting name ideas [Edited on May 5, 2009 at 2:34 PM. Reason : ^ I like that one too]
5/5/2009 2:34:41 PM

dirty face?? really? that's a terrible name
5/5/2009 3:53:52 PM
I always liked Tuco or Blondie in honor of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.Of course, Hitler's dog was named Blondie, so maybe just Tuco.[Edited on May 5, 2009 at 3:59 PM. Reason : .]
5/5/2009 3:58:53 PM
^^^ We call my cat Mama Kitty, and we currently have a Bear ^ I like TucoI'm thinking if the pup is chill but still a badass, maybe Doc Holliday... or maybe Wyatt (diff personality though)
5/5/2009 4:09:46 PM
The big test is finding a name that won't be embarassing to yell when when you're wandering the neighborhood at 3am in a bathrobe looking for your dog.
5/5/2009 4:16:59 PM
^ Haha.. I guess that gets rid of "Porkchop"
5/5/2009 4:19:14 PM
Pet names my family's had:Smokey, Bailey, Sonia, Dewey, Maggie, mine is named Molly/Beagle (goes by both)Cats: Sam, Snickers, Sabrina, Shelley (my mom had a theme going)Horses: Wiley, Kathy, Julie, Kid, Dusty, Britt, Magic and Clancy ( I named the last), The best names I had going were for hermit crabs: Socrates, Plato, Pythagoras, etc.current horse I ride is named Molly, so confusing when discussing dog or horse.
5/5/2009 7:13:23 PM
I've got a cat named Snickers too. She's evil.Girl dogs: Sandy, SadieBoy dogs: Ozzy, MoeI definitely support going with a two syllable name that ends in with a y/ie sound. I heard dogs learn a lot quicker with those names.
5/5/2009 9:19:55 PM
I got my dog at 8mos old and he was already named Shep, I wasn't too fond of it at first but it stuck
5/5/2009 10:35:58 PM
Well, we went just to look today and I fell in love with him so we got him today. I named him Gambit because it actually did fit so well -- high energy, for sure. He's such a sweetie!! Here he is:
5/5/2009 11:38:54 PM
I'm naming my next dog 'log' .
