My explorer makes a ridiculously loud whirring sound when you start coasting or slowing down from highway speed. The same thing happened twice before and it was fixed at captial ford. Once was $800 the second was when I gave it to my dad and he paid like $1500 to get it fixed. That time the guy told him it was probably from one of the tires being slightly inflated differently. That sort of made sense but I am pretty sure it has not been driven on a slack tire since the last repair. The last repair is out of warranty so I am trying to figure out where to take it and why it keeps happening. I do not really want to take it to Capital Ford again.

sounds like you have a rear end problem, it was probably never set up right the last time it was fixed, check your diff fluid, could just be low, if not then drain it and run a magnet around in the used oil, if you have steel particles, time to tear it down

the first two times they said it was the gear reduction forksomething to do with traction control
5/3/2009 10:03:33 PM
is it full time 4wd?and what fuckin year
5/3/2009 10:04:55 PM
part time (the 4x4 with "auto" that you cant turn off)its 1997 186k
5/3/2009 10:05:51 PM
v6 or v8?
5/3/2009 10:08:33 PM
v6
5/3/2009 10:09:19 PM
you may be in 4wd all the time, does in feel like it binds up or shudders in tight turns on dry pavement?the other way to tell is just take out the front driveshaft and see if it goes away
5/3/2009 10:12:09 PM
the only thing i cant figure out about that is if it was stuck in 4wd why would it only be making the noise when slowing down.you can be driving 80mph and as soon as you let the gas off it roars, then if you press the gas it stops, then let off and it makes noise again, if you press the gas a little while braking it does not do it. i noticed this the day it broke, drove it straight home after work and parked it.

pinion bearings?
5/3/2009 11:12:12 PM
east coast gear supply. get chase to look at it 919-672-2705 like 69 said, might be something in the rear end. if it whirrs when no throttle is applied maybe the gears are fawked and it's whirring on the coast side of the gears? at any rate if you need gear work I'd for sure take it to chase.
5/3/2009 11:34:39 PM
just pop the cover and take a look, it wont cost you more than some rtv and a couple quarts of gear oil

if you want me to pull the cover and check things over I could. pm me if you want me to.
5/5/2009 10:26:05 PM
did someone say exploder?
5/6/2009 12:51:34 AM
update?
5/17/2009 8:56:20 PM
still crapped in driveway collecting dust
6/2/2009 1:53:40 PM
still got that disco?
6/2/2009 4:27:13 PM
I could not afford to keep it up anymore. Right now I am driving a 1995 taurus station wagon
6/3/2009 11:31:00 AM
i bet you pull down mad weiner in that thing
6/30/2009 7:38:47 AM
my brother has a 3/4 ton Ford that started doing the same thing at about 275,000 miles. He tightened the nut on the pinion yoke that controls how close the pinion is to the ring gear and it has been doing fine for several years.
6/30/2009 7:52:55 AM
actually that only adjusts the preload, or clearance in the pinion bearings

The transfer case needs to be overhauled and ford no longer makes the parts. They said the only thing to do is replace the whole transfer case. ~$1750any ideas?
8/10/2009 5:26:07 PM
guess you should have kept the land rover
8/10/2009 5:31:09 PM
time to make a custom D/S from trans to rear end. sell transfer case, and sell all the internals from the front driveline
8/10/2009 5:33:22 PM
^^ negative ^
8/10/2009 5:42:53 PM
get one from lkq or http://www.car-part.com
8/10/2009 6:41:26 PM
^ i dont mean to steal your thunder here, its a good idea, but it would suck to pull it, put it in, and 2 weeks later have it fuck up, if you wanna do itthe right way, pull it and take it to have it checked first. this just depends on how much you care about this unit
8/10/2009 10:49:22 PM
you dont have to get the parts from ford
10/14/2009 7:26:43 PM
I got a new one with a 100k mile warranty. Then replaced a belt tensioner and water pump, hopefully I am good for a while.
10/14/2009 7:43:39 PM
that really says it all about ragged's mechanical aptitude
10/14/2009 9:11:45 PM
you mean lack of?
10/15/2009 7:45:22 AM
exactly
10/15/2009 8:44:09 AM
i concur
10/15/2009 11:06:16 AM
A friend has a similar exploder, 96, 5.0 and full time all wheel drive with no switches. i think the chain/gears in the transfer case is shot. when accelerating any at all you get a popping noise from the case. Where is a good place to get the case rebuilt(raleigh to burlington, he travels)? We will pull it ourselves.
10/23/2009 12:02:41 AM
just pull one from a junkyard, they are expensive to rebuild if they are that far gone[Edited on October 23, 2009 at 7:21 AM. Reason : or just take out the front driveshaft and run it as is]
10/23/2009 7:21:01 AM
lkq has quite a few exploders in the yard right now.
10/23/2009 9:44:11 AM
whatever hapened to lee's old one?
